I got in on this deal at CC. It is no doubt one of the fastest burners I've used. However, it's supposed to be able to backup SD2 protected disks. Has anyone got the TDK burner to do this. So far, I've made 4 coasters trying to back up Pools of Radiance. It's wierd, because I can easily back it up using my Imation (ne Plextor) 12X drive. BTW, the Imation is still an awesome drive.

Went to BB in Mission Viejo CA on sunday and they still had over 20 units up above the shelves. The oceanside for some reason doesn't even carry any TDKs. I wondered why.

OK, so they have 20 units......... that doesn't really mean much unless they are still selling them cheap.....

I checked this out at the Best Buy in Elmhurst, Queens today and the deal is dead there. It's back to $150 w/ $50 MIR. If anyone's Best Buy has them on sale still, please email me, I'd like to buy one.

I had to pay $129.99 for mine, but I was able to get two $20 rebates. Don't ask! So, I'll get $90 back, plus I sold my 16x10x40 for $60.00 so, I made $10.00 to upgrade.

No luck in trying to pricematch with any receipts... BUT, if anyone finds this drive ONLINE that is cheaper, AX BVG will match this price, because BB does not price match online stores. I got idea from the AX CSR when I called them today.. So, for all that bought at $129, we have 60 days to find this drive cheaper online, and then file a claim with BVG!!!

So, not dead yet!

Yes, after the frenzy of the moment, getting or not_getting; then the announcement of the second quarter 2 gig drives and the "coming soon to your neighborhood__the 40X + drives that will populate 2002-2003...ah so, I'll wait for the zero to minus prices on the ones we have today, or the 10-20 USD that we get tomorrow (of if not tomorrow, then next quarter)....it'll happen; trust me.

Major off topic:

BUt how the hell is a drive/to/drive copy going to work with a 40x burner? CD/DVD readers arent getting any faster.

So it starts...buffer runs out, takes 30 secs or so to click in Burnproof...shut off the burn laser...fill in the buffer....start again...starts writing....buffer runs out....same thing again.

TOTAL overall time will still be the same as a good 24x drive to drive copy.

I currently have 16x DVD drives, and can do a drive to drive copy with my 24x Plextor (without BurnProof kicking in). But if the source drive doesnt get faster, it will slow down the whole process.

The speed of a 16X DVD drive is eqaul to the speed of a 40X CD-rom drive. If you look at box of a 16X DVD, it will say 16X DVD, 40X CD-rom on the box.

MicroCenter has this drive for $99.00. If you have a Microcenter around you could pricematch and get 50 rebate. 49.99 is not bad. I saw at least 10 of these at the Cincinnati MicroCenter.

Considering CD-ROM drives go clear up to 72x (Kenwoods) I don't think that's a valid issue. Also, DVD Read DOES NOT equal CD Read.

See post above. 16x DVD read, 40x CD-ROM read.

Yes, I know all about that. My 16x DVD are also 40X CDROMs.

But you are all VERY misguided if you believe just because your 16xDVD/40xCDROM can *READ* at theoretical max 40X, that it also does 40X DAE.
