This morning my LCD shut off and I noticed a burning smell. I let it sit for a while before hitting the power button again, and to my surprise it still works. However, it seems to be somewhat brighter at the same brightness settings. Is this something I need to worry about / fix, or should I leave it alone? I'm fairly handy with an iron but I haven't pulled it apart yet and am not sure if I'd easily be able to locate whatever failed, not knowing even roughly how things are wired on the inside.

Pertinent information:

BenQ FP241W - 24" MVA panel
~8 years old, used heavily

I have a second one that is somewhat dimmer than it was originally, which I use as a second screen. I'm rather attached to these screens, they have excellent image quality even by today's standards.

Burning smell?

I would NOT let them run unobserved any longer.

As to what could have happened: Perhaps some kind of resistor?

The burning smell is gone, and I'm certain something popped in one of them. Likely a resistor, as you suggested. I have no idea if one going will make the others more likely to fail or not.

EDIT: I never run my monitors "unobserved".

More likely a capacitor than a resistor in my experience. Open it an look at the boards a blown capacitor will be obvious usually...

i'd guess a wire to a CCFL got severed, arced ( burning insulation/rubber ), and got welded back to the other side of the wire
