Burnt Quantum Fireball lct10 controller board

Hi,

Philips chip on my Quantum Fireball lct10 controller board was burnt

I have a board from Quantum Fireball CX model (from my friend's computer). Has anybody tried to interchange lct 10 with CX controller boards? I don't want to ruin my or my friends hard drives...

Please let me know if anybody has done it.

We had built up quite a pile of those drives, and tried to use a board from one that would still spin. It seemed that all of the motors also had some sort of problem, because none of them would spin up. I have tranfered controllers before with no problem, but I wouldn't use his drive if he still runs it.

Those drives had major issues with blowing chips out. So if your buddy is still using his, I'd start thinking about replacing it.

So, have you interchanged CX and lct controllers? I understand that these drives are unreliable and it would be better to replace them, but at this moment I need to recover data from my lct drive. If I use CX controller on lct do I have a risk of damaging either of them?

According to their tech data they both have 16,383 Cylinders, 16 Heads and 63 Sectors, but lct has 2 Recording Surfaces (a single platter?) when CX has 3 Recording Surfaces (2 platters?). So, I'm wondering...

Forgot to mention: they're both 10.2 G drives.

It is not going to be as simple as just replacing the controller boards and booting up the system. Since the controllers are from two different drives with different platter arrangements, most of the data is not going to be readily retrievable. And even if it is, the chance of causing corruption is way larger than the chance of success. If you need the data that badly, take it to a professional with the correct equiptment to remove the platters and scrape the data off of them in a controlled environment.
