It seems that even if Bush does as expected and pardons Cheney, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld and himself for their part in any potential "war crimes" activity, this will not make everything go away. Seems other countries have views on this and Bush and Co. may need to think twice before traveling after they leave office...

I especially like this part: "...20 countries now have universal jurisdiction laws that would allow them to indict U.S. officials for torture if America doesn't do it itself."

Can we pass a law that these 20 countries Leadership teams, who have directly caused through inaction, as much, or more, death in Sudan than Iraq (where it was Iraqi's themselves killing Iraqi's), be held to the same standard?

I wonder if the EU has got those 20 helicopters that were preventing them from doing anything there yet....or, is everyone that could have been saved dead by now??

I doubt it would happen outside of countries that are our adversaries, and even then the political pressure to return them to the United States would be too large. Can you imagine us detaining a former President of China for what went on in Tibet?

Not sure if this is the right way to go about it, but clearly we need to start holding those at the top accountable for their actions, and not merely throwing the book at a few grunts who were merely following orders.

Why wait for Bush to leave office? They could have already tried Clinton & Co. for rendition...

Oh wait. doesn't quite match the political agenda...

What is possible today may not be true of tomorrow, and what we now know about widely suspected violations of international law by GWB&co, is likely to pale before what we will learn soon after GWB&co leaves office. Even if GWB&co pardons themselves and the Obama administration is super reluctant to prosecute GWB&co for war crimes, we cannot look through the lens of what we know now to view what we may know
six months or more from now.

Even if some other countries decide to feel froggie and try to prosecute any officials of GWB&co, there may be some not inconsequential US resistance I for one would not endorse, and that will be matter for time to tell regarding international pressure to prosecute GWB&co.

But then again, the viable paragraph from the provided links is, " This doesn't mean it will extradite Cheney and Co. to stand trial abroad. But at the very least, the threat of such suits could soon force Bush aides to think twice before buying plane tickets. "The world is getting smaller for these guys," says Ratner, "and they'll have to check with their lawyers very carefully before they travel." Jail time it isn't?but it may be some justice nonetheless. " And the other possible message is, when we in the USA actually find more about their gag a maggot torture policies, a vast majority of the American people may start to support their deportation to the Hague, leaving a part of GWB&co absolutely no refuge in the entire world for international war criminal scoundrels.

The mere fact that we, in the USA, are not there yet, may not be true six months or a year from now.

My prediction:

There won't be any significant investigations by the Democrats, the whole thing will be swept under the rug, and if we ever learn anything it will be after the principle parties are long dead.

They will live a grand life, free from fear, in the firm conviction that they did the right thing. They'll sleep soundly until the end of their long and happy days.

That's what power buys.

Seconded. It would be nice to at least have some kind of serious inquiry, but yeah, it'll never happen.

If you're referring to other countries with the universal jx., then it's because a sitting leader or high level cabinet member/minister has immunity while in office.

Political agenda aside, what a stupid thread. We (USA) are the great decider, and we have already decided. A few wailing dissenters aren't going to change anything, either.

STFU world. We are the world. Seriously if you think about it the whole USA is like a macro United Nations totally beyond rebuke due to that fact and stands alone in her diversity. I love this country despite our leaders ineptness from time to time and most people feel the same rendering extradical courts null and void since they have no power w/o us.
