I heard on the radio Bush saying something along the lines of "This would have been the first time this country endorsed the DEE-LIH-BRITT destruction of potential human life".

What a stupid, stupid, stupid man. Seriously, he has no freaking clue what is going on outside his monkey-brained head.

I guess this means masturbation will soon be illegal as isn't that the same thing?

What about all the soldiers he sent to die for a phoney war that may have procreated.

He destroyed their cells, he is just as guilty of murder based on his religious sick mentality.

You know, you'd think Bush could have used the veto to ... oh I don't know ... force some fiscal restraint on the GOP-led Congress? There have been plenty of egregious and excessive spending bills that could have been veto'd, but no, he waits for this. And to top it off his explanation rings just as ignorant and irresponsible as I believed it would. Unwanted frozen embryos from fertility clinics are not human beings entitled to the same rights and priveleges as the rest of us. I know it's an election year, and I know the GOP is falling all over themselves trying to pander to their ignorant base, but geeze.

"Some of you are a bit sensationalist in your attacks on the religious right.

For all its faults, the religious right has Constitutional protection to its beliefs and values...and one of those values just happens to be opposition to the notion of stem cell research...similarly, as the religious right has demonstrated an ability to swing elections, Bush is simply pandering to the constituency that is carrying the Republican party.

However, there are an equal number of people who do not want our nation's values to mirror those extracted from the Bible. If these people want to change the direction towards which the nation is shifting, they have the power and authority to cause that shift through the election process.

I am a conservative and fully support stem cell research. For the first time in my life, I would consider voting for a Democrat, largely because of the Bush Administration...but my vote will require a candidate that does not swing too far left, as I don't think that political ideology is any better then the religious right.

Democrats...ball is in your court...has been for some time...bitching about the "American Taliban" is one of the reasons why Bush is still in office. "

My sentiments exactly!

If the Democrats bring forth a candidate who is not too far to the left, I'll vote for him/her.
While I like the Republican ideals, or at least what used to be their ideals, they have gone too far to the right.

We need a candidate who actually cares about our country, not the special interest groups lining their pockets, or their religious beleifs. (this goes for both parties).

he stands by his convictions. I wish he'd signed it. But I can see his point of view and admire him for not being a flip flopper.

Bush has has publically supported IVF (which destroys stem cells) and then gone on to denouce fetal stem cell research (because it destroys stem-cells). WTF?

Dont you get it? This was a TOTAL scam. The whitehouse KNEW and INSTRUCTED the house and senate to go thru this. Knowing exactly how it would come down. Knowing the senate would not be able to over ride the veto. What shocks me is how many people are STILL fooled by these fools and their scams on the American people. Its all for the upcoming elections and "playing" to the 60+ % that support passing this. So those scummy republicans can say "hey, I support stem cell research. Not my fault it is not law".
BUT... thats what THEY do. THATS how they work.
Its up to YOU to vote these scums OUT OF OFFICE once and for all.

Dont get me started...

No way. Stem cell research would give the VP a new heart and 10 more years in office as President.

The heart of a rotten apple is a pit... In this case the depth is greater than the tree from whence the apple fell. I'd not like to deny anyone the benefits of science but neither would I want to deny life to a potential life form... I know that is only one source but I can see now the motives articulated... "I give up my fetus for science"..... heheheh
I flow back and forth on that aspect of the issue... other means of garnering stem cells is fine by me... and maybe even this means.. not sure really..

GenX, Clinton's veto came about because there was no provision to allow for exceptions in the case of rape or incest - items that were likely left out on purpose to make him look bad when he veto'd it.

You can't possibly defend Bush on this one, so you pull out the 'what about Clinton' card - lame.

This is a HUGE mistake, and the sad part is that half of this country has no idea what has just happened.

How moronic is this President?

On what ground does Bush think he is standing??

On the grounds he's an ignorant religious zealot with no intention of representing the people of the United States, only his own twisted aspirations.
people like to use the word ignorant in here for some reason. the President is not ignorant. he is definitely opinionated on the topic of stem cell research, but he is not lacking education or knowledge.

wow dude you are seriously uninformed to make a comment like that. mosh is just like the rest of the bush supporters unfortunately, and for some reason he always comes to Bush's aid when he is being attacked. The criticism is justified, this president is wholly incapable and unqualified for the job and has further disgraced the most sacred and powerful position in the world. You should be ashamed of yourself

Why would you need a partial birth abortion even if you were raped?

To emotionally experience the revenge factor, psychological cleansing of one's soul after violation.

There's a bit of a difference say between funding research that will save lives and/or improve the quality of life and building a bridge to nowhere or millions renovating the museum of corn or other pork projects.

Anyone know where I can get some detail on the bill? I suspect the reason he vetod it was due to ESCs...
Well, here's a quote from BBSNews (a conservative news outlet, no less):

The bill passed by both houses of Congress and sent to the president had the following important provisions giving the lie to any notion of immorality:

(1) The stem cells were derived from human embryos that have been donated from in vitro fertilization clinics, were created for the purposes of fertility treatment, and were in excess of the clinical need of the individuals seeking such treatment.

(2) Prior to the consideration of embryo donation and through consultation with the individuals seeking fertility treatment, it was determined that the embryos would never be implanted in a woman and would otherwise be discarded.

(3) The individuals seeking fertility treatment donated the embryos with written informed consent and without receiving any financial or other inducements to make the donation.

Ah - now we have the reason that Clinton harpooned Monica.

What does a rape or incest have to do with a partial birth abortion? The answer is nothing, it is a disgusting practice, and if rape or incest was such a determining factor they could have had the procedure done in the first two trimesters.

He looked bad for the veto because the practice is barbaric.

Bottom line is both pandered to the extremes within their party, and that is my point.
