In case you're wondering why a shoe, it's supposed to be insulting and humiliating in Arabic culture, kinda like getting slapped in the US.

As a side note, did you guys notice that the reporter directly behind the shoe thrower tried to stop him? Then after the first one the reporter in front of him stood up to try and block him from the president. Both happened before the Secret Service was anywhere near being able to respond.

IIRC don't shoes have more of a special (dirty?) significance in Islam? Has to do with removing shoes before prayer because they are unclean or something like that...
