The White House apparently intended the event to be a question-and-answer session with the soldiers, as Bush, adopting a folksy, informal manner, sought both to assure them of popular support and draw them out about their activities in Iraq.

But the troops, who sat in three tiered rows at their base in Tikrit, the hometown of deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, took turns giving what appeared to be prepared statements that were not necessarily related to the questions Bush was asking.

When Master Sgt. Corrine Lombardo, of Scotia, N.Y., recalled Bush's visit to New York City following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and thanked him for recognizing her unit's role in rescue efforts, Bush sought to engage her in conversation. "Were you there when I came to New York?" he asked.

"Yes I was, Mr. President," Lombardo said.

"Yeah, I thought you looked familiar," Bush said, adding, "I probably look familiar to you, too."

Lombardo went on to praise "a tremendous increase in the capabilities and the confidences of our Iraqi security force partners," and Bush told her, "I appreciate you bringing that up, Sergeant Major."

Asked if he had something to say, an Iraqi soldier identified only as "Sergeant Major Akeel" of the 5th Iraqi army division, answered, "Good morning, Mr. President. Thank you for everything, sir. Thank you very much for everything. . . . I like you."

Bush chuckled and said, "Well, I appreciate that."

Wow, pathetic. They hand pick some soldiers for their PR event. I'd love to see the same event with random soldiers, not neocon cheerleaders.

There was a Cpt from my home town (Pocatello, ID) in that event. I would swear by the way he was responding / speaking that he was reading from a prompter.

In all fairness, this was just one reporter's impression. I can certainly imagine, though, that they wanted to avoid having any potentially embarrassing questions asked (remember the incident with Rumsfeld?), and so they had all the questions vetted by a Public Affairs officer.

It isn't scripted! I think it was Harriet Miers in camo though.

It's not an impression. All of us can see that the coaching was going on for ourselves.

Sad,

aren't we down to just one Iraqi battalion now?

Edit:

just saw this Check out Fox..

The exchange was carefully choreographed.

Before it began, a Pentagon official coached the troops, telling them the president planned to ask questions on three topics: The overall security in Iraq, how they were preparing for the vote on Saturday and how much progress had been made in the training of Iraqi troops.

Allison Barber, a Pentagon official, said Bush would ask them specifically, "In the last 10 months, what kind of progress have we seen?"

She asked who was prepared to answer the question. "Master Sgt. Lombardo," one said

The NBC Nightly News just had a rather lengthy article exposing this charade as well. Also mentioned the recent criticism of their covert propaganda by the Dept of Education. Oopsie, busted again.

Does anyone here recall that press conference last year (?) where that soldier asked Rumsfeld a question that had been planted by the media? I don't recall you people having a problem with that. Same idea, isn't it?

No I don't. If some soldier wants to go along with a reports question, then so be it. No media person controls the military, so it's not coercion. Was the qustion "I like you"? No, it was a real question about body armor, it was a real question that needed an answer.

I don't like my government using my money for propaganda to sway public opinion. I don't suppose you can tell the difference, your type is all black and white.

Actually its alot different. Bush already knew the questions and answers to this one. The incident you mention just was someone asking a question that someone else told them to ask. It would have been a different story if the planted question was not a valid question but by the cheers after it was asked I guess it was on peoples minds.

I recall. I recall that the soldier was actually scrounging the boneyard for scraps of armor to use on vehicles. I think it was shortly after that the Baghdad Airlift began.

With all the propaganda the left floods us with, I'm not surprised.

Didn't something like 70-80% of soldiers vote for Bush?

Yes. He considers it the keystone of his long-term strategery.

But only until Cheyney explains the 22nd amendment to him in single syllable words.

YABSDAPS (Yet Another BullSh8 Dog And Pony Show). Karl Rove must have worked overtime thinking of this... in between trying to come up with more lies for his next appearance before the Grand Jury.
