More of our tax dollars wasted on offensive weapons that will never be used in a practical situation.

We are already 20+ years ahead of everyone else with our next-gen planes such as the JSF and others; those plans would recoup their costs as practical multi-role fighters.

We can already destroy the world with missiles, our tomahawks have range exceeding 400+ miles. Is the extra range really worth all the tax dollars?
F#ck I want my money, not wasted in some stupid single-role single-situation bomber.

Do you have another link to this story besides the Guardian?

The Guardian is the British equivalent to the Enquirer in the US.

Very impressive but POINTLESS, do you have any idea what that would do to the world just by making a prototype. This would unbalance everything. I´m starting to belive the hoax Nastrodamus prediction about some idiot leading us to ww3.

Techies trashing tech, what next.

The reason this is necessary is that we keep losing airbases in other countries, like the Gulf War required negotiating with Saudi Arabia in order to use them as a base for our airplanes.

We've lost the base in the Phillipines, and numerous others. These represent huge losses in $ because of the extortion sanctioned by other governments in order to keep our planes on their soil. Have you heard of any countries outside of Europe offering us land for an airbase? And we're not particularly welcome @ the bases we already have...

Almost forgot, China's current government hates the U.S. If you have a friend that has ties to China ask them what the popular opinion of the U.S. is in China. They not only hate us, they think we're evil, and should be eradicated from the face of the earth.

We (the U.S.) need this kind of leverage.

Also, the P.C. you're using wouldn't exist without government research through NASA & our military. But I guess we don't need PC's either

Clinton used up a large portion of our cruise missles against Iraq, we'll need to build more.

This would be a great idea. Being able to destroy the enemy a world away in thirty minutes means that the enemy will make sure they can completely destroy us in 10. It will be instantaneous and we won't suffer.

Two words: arms race.

If the US has no one to hold an arms race against, they hold one against their paranoia.

BTW Moonbeam, did I already mention that I really like your sarcasm?

and constitute a clear and offensive violation of the 1972 Anti Ballistic Missile Treaty with Russia.

Our treaty was with the U.S.S.R.; now that they're not around anymore does the treaty still hold any weight anyhow?

Thats right. Better to be 100 years ahead of everyone else. Youd be suprised how quickly they can catch up.

AND...As the leader in this arena, we are paving the way for the eventual planetary defense system(s).

Against WHO???????

You never know. Do you really think it might never happen? Im not a big UFO geek, but Ive watched ST for so long Im not so sure about it never happening.

On the other side, if we are indeed the only life in a universe of 'billions and billions' of galaxies, maybe it is our destiny to populate it.

...unless we exterminate ourselves accidentally with one of those lasers and other toys. There are still a few thousand nuclear warheads on this planet as well. All we need is one wacko guy with access to those warheads or lasers.

The end of Humanity would be crispy.

God forbid we build something to actually defend ourselves and make people thinks twice about screwing with us. Jeez what an evil nation we are.

Yeah, just imagine the US's paranoia attacking the US without it having a powerful weapon against it
