New Orleans mayor issues "desperate SOS"-CNN

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin issued an urgent plea for relief on Thursday, saying the flooded city lacked food for thousands of Hurricane Katrina's refugees and buses to evacuate them, CNN reported.

"This is a desperate SOS. Right now we are out of resources at the Convention Center and don't anticipate enough buses. Currently the Convention Center is unsanitary and unsafe and we are running out of supplies for 15,000 to 25,000 people," he said in the statement read by CNN.

CNN reports that it has been raining in New Orleans for two hours.

You right. However there must have been some sort of plan by the Adminstration to help the NO people. We will have to wait and see.

CNN's Wolf Blitzer is talking to their producer "Kim" who has been in New Orleans since after the storm. Blitzer asked her about who was at the convention center. National Guard? Military? Police?

Her reply -- NO ONE! We are here and they are happy to see us. People in the convention center have had NO water or food for four days other than what they were able to get from a local convenience store.

There is no plan. There is nothing but chaos.

Current weather forcast for New Orleans:

With a weak trough of low pressure near the area...daytime heating...and increasing instability...clusters of showers and thunderstorms are forecast to continue through mid afternoon from the Mississippi Gulf Coast...to across southeast Louisiana along and south of I10 and I12.
This includes most areas around Lake Pontchartrain. Storms will be slow movers through 330 PM...bringing locally reduced visibilities in very heavy rains and winds gusting to 30 to 40 mph at times.
Rainfall rates up to two inches per hour will be possible in some of the storms. Due to lightning and heavy rains in thunderstorms... hurricane relief efforts could be hindered at times.

Now sniper fire is keeping doctors at Charity Hospital from evacuating the most critical patients. No military, no National Guard, no police. No security presence at all, four days after Katrina.

WTF is going on? Anarchy?

WHERE IS THE HELP FOR THESE PEOPLE?

Also, the display by the left here is repugnant. They want something - ANYTHING - to blame Bush for that they'll stoop to this level of political finger pointing.

Editorials Raise Questions About President's Response to Katrina--and Lack of Preparations

By E&P Staff

Published: August 31, 2005 10:30 PM ET

NEW YORK As the truth sinks in--this is the worst natural disaster in the nation's history--editorials in a wide range of newspapers have now raised critical issues about the lack of preparation, the effects of so many National Guard sent to Iraq, and the response of President Bush to the tragedy this week.

One of the most stalwart conservative newspapers in the nation, the Union Leader of New Hampshire, today blasted Bush's response to the great Gulf Coast hurricane.

"A better leader would have flown straight to the disaster zone and announced the immediate mobilization of every available resource to rescue the stranded, find and bury the dead, and keep the survivors fed, clothed, sheltered and free of disease," the editorial declared. "The cool, confident, intuitive leadership Bush exhibited in his first term, particularly in the months immediately following Sept. 11, 2001, has vanished. In its place is a diffident detachment unsuitable for the leader of a nation facing war, natural disaster and economic uncertainty.

"Wherever the old George W. Bush went, we sure wish we had him back."

On Thursday, after the president returned to Washington, The New York Times mocked his speech: "George W. Bush gave one of the worst speeches of his life yesterday, especially given the level of national distress and the need for words of consolation and wisdom. In what seems to be a ritual in this administration, the president appeared a day later than he was needed. He then read an address of a quality more appropriate for an Arbor Day celebration: a long laundry list of pounds of ice, generators and blankets delivered to the stricken Gulf Coast. He advised the public that anybody who wanted to help should send cash, grinned, and promised that everything would work out in the end."

The Washington Post, meanwhile, called for a close look at what should have been done differently, saying "it will be extremely important to better understand the causes of this long-predicted disaster and to determine what, if anything, could have prevented it. This administration has consistently played down the possibility of environmental disaster, in Louisiana and everywhere else. The president's most recent budgets have actually proposed reducing funding for flood prevention in the New Orleans area, and the administration has long ignored Louisiana politicians' requests for more help in protecting their fragile coast, the destruction of which meant there was little to slow down the hurricane before it hit the city.

"It is inappropriate to 'blame' anyone for a natural disaster. But given how frequently the impact of this one was predicted, and given the scale of the economic and human catastrophe that has resulted, it is certainly fair to ask questions about disaster preparations. Congress, when it returns, should rise above the blame game and instead probe the state of the nation's preparation for handling major natural catastrophes, particularly those that threaten crucial regions of the country."

The Albuquerque (N.M.) Tribune asked: "Like the National Guard, is FEMA itself being stretched too thin by the number and increasing intensity of natural disasters such as hurricanes and wildfires? That's not to mention the potential for earthquakes, including the so-called 'Big One' in California."

"I'm not saying it wouldn't still be flooded, but I do feel that if it had been totally funded, there would be less flooding than you have," said Michael Parker, a former Republican Mississippi congressman who headed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from October 2001 until March 2002, when he was ousted after publicly criticizing a Bush administration proposal to cut the corps' budget.

The word is that in Jefferson Parish and Orleans, FEMA has "bugged out." They haven't brought supplies in.

THE REAL MILITARY IS NOW FLOWING IN. National Guard is being replaced before our eyes. Watch the feed.

Word is that the Marines are at 1515 Poydras where our OC4s are. I think we're coming back online in force shortly.

On another note: I've just been told that we're being monitored in Iraq! To all the troops there, from one soldier to another, we're hanging tough here and you hang tough too. No matter what you're hearing, we love you guys and want you to know that we know how hard you've got it. Stay strong!

Good! Finally!

Yep. He's nothing but a shreeking partisan beacon, all alarmism and no answers himself. Something has to be done, but he has no rational idea what that is, as if jumping on his soapbox and screaming BUSH HASN"T DONE A THING (which is bullsh!t) is going to change a damn thing. What an absolutely putrid display of over-the-top partisanism. Displays like his are exactly why many people think the left are nothing but fringe hacks. They so readily demonstrate their hackery like a peacock on display.

Go sh!t in your hat chicken. You're a partisan scumbag par-excellence. Anyone who could excuse the inaction of these past four days is a complete partisan whore. And you're one with feathers.

How the hell can you or anyone excuse leaving 100,000 people to fend for themselves in a city that is destroyed by a natural disaster that EVERYONE knew was coming?

Where is the airlift? Are you telling us that the U.S. government doesn't have the resources to drop food and water to these people?

Ridiculous.

Cafferty on CNN apparently just went apesh*t about the lack of Federal response. Said there was no excuse to not drop water for these people. He was apparently 10/10 on the rant scale. Said he'd discuss the race issue later.

Said this is biggest 'bungle' by the FED gov. he has ever seen ever!

Lack of Federal response? WTF is he smoking!? There has been overwhelming response by t he Feds. You can whine about how long things are taking but it's an empty execise. The people on the ground are the ones making the decisions -the Feds are there to provide support and resources - which they've done every time they've been asked.

This BS about not dropping water is asinine. HTF are the Feds supposed to do this? It's a local and people on the ground issue - they are the ones who need to be getting this stuff out to the people and they are doing so. Yes, there are still people trapped and starving -but you partisan trolls trying to claim it's somehow the Feds fault are way off base. Try helping the process - not play your insipid little partisan attack games. You disgust me.

Hugo Chavez Blasts Bush, Offers Hurricane Aid to South

Meanwhile, international leaders are joining the chorus of voices in this country saying that the government failed to prepare for a disaster it knew was imminent. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez blasted President Bush for waiting until after Hurricane Katrina hit the United States to end his vacation in Texas. At the same time, Chavez expressed sympathy for the storm's victims and repeated his offer to send aid workers to the devastated southern US states. Meanwhile, Citgo, the US subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil giant, announced it would donate one million dollars to US aid organizations helping hurricane victims.
