OMG, I just went nuts on staples.com.

I have succombed to the temptation of ...oh god... $60 in coupons and $240 in rebates...GOD HELP ME

In My experience, the lite-on works more reliably in that it is not too picky with media, I have both lite-on and aopen 48x drives, I have pretty much given up on burning to the aopen, get too many 'completed' burns on music cd's that are not readable in my car stereo, lite-on burns ALWAYS work on the same media...am using fuji, sony, and optimum from staples, among other...

It is not so much speed, but just over-all quality of the burn...


YMMV, but when push comes to shove, lite-on has been more reliable...

thanks for your reply. the reason i stated 24x is because i have lots of 12x cd-r's that burn great at 24x, but dont do too well with anything over 40x. Also, 24x speeds are just fine for me, as i can happily deal with a 4 minute burn time for a full cd. interesting to note about the quality comments of the lite-on units. i have purchased and used over 10 lite-on cd-rw's in the past 2 years, and have been pleased with each of them. however, i was getting the idea that most of today's cd-rw's are equivalent in the basic operation of burning a cd-r. nothing fancy in terms of it doing over-burning, DAE speeds, or Mt. Rainer support. Again, I appreciate all of your input.

Just ordered one off the website with the 10-off-50 coupon. The picture on the site is of a box w/ the SmartBurn thing on it so if they send me a non-LiteOn I will hit with a tackhammer a couple times, RMA, and sue the pants off them for false advertising.

here in new britain CT, all are buslink (lite-on). I saw about~15 of them yesterday on the table just after coming in the store. I guess nobody's interested here. How I wish could have gotten more. Now the snow here is at least 5-6", and still coming. :frown:

I just came back from Stables in Seneca, SC with a liteon one. They have both kinds. They have about 8 liteons left. They were sold out of the 48x cdr's though. I still need to find some free ones somewhere.

I just went and picked up my fourth one. Yes, 4. All are liteons and I am only keeping one for myself. One is going to another person here on Anandtech and the two others I am selling. It hurts to get paid for a getting a brand new drive.

The verions I got work with liteon drives. I don't have any other type of burners, but it did't require a serial and I was able to download the latest Nero version from the web.

You guys need to remember to get your 2% Staples rebate from ebates and 2% off with American Express rebate card when you order. I ordered the drive on Monday and it arrived today. It was a Justlink / Ricoh rebranded drive.

You can go to Staples and trade in the drive for a Smartburn version. Some people have done that over at the wallet.

BTW- The drives were only on a two day sale that ended on monday.

I used the ebates when i bought this burner online sunday. I got a little popup saying its there because of IE not being able to show the ebates frame. I just clicked the submit button and closed it. Anyways, It took me to the staples page. I choose the item and bought it. Then checked the ebates account and it still shows "0". Pisses me off. The staples web site does still say "processing" but I have called them and they confirmed it has been shipped and will be here wednesday. Maybe the web site has to say shipped before the ebates counts?? Maybe i should have left that popup open till after my purchase?? I dunno. Never used ebates before. I'm getting the feeling i lost this order on ebates
