High speed burners are a fairly a recent thing. CDR manufacturers usually just slap a higher speed sticker onto CDRs that had 1x-16x labels on them.

All old Sony and Fuji TY have a 1x-16x sticker but people have burned at twice those speeds easyly.

Why does Nero automatically LIMIT you to 16x with that media now, I mean could this be a Nero or a Burner thing? There doesn't seem to be any info on this.

If you read or heard of anything like this, please post.

Same problem w/ my 48x24x48 lite on. Can burn blank cd that came w/ kit at 48X, but can only burn my 16X Fuji TY cd at 16X, my old Sanyo 24x10x24 can burn the same TY cd at 24X.

Finally - confirmation.
Exactly, we want the ability to choose whether to risc burning at higher speeds or not, damn it!

OK so now let's find out if it's Nero or the Burner.

I'll install old Nero, then I'll install that other Burning prog, what is it called? Easy CD Creator, then we'll see what's to blame. Will post tonight.

download latest version, go to where you can select\switch recorders, there is some sort of "advanced" button for you to turn smartburn off, for some drives.

OK. If this is true, turning smartburn off would take away buffer underrun protection, right?
But it has been said here before that the only reason those CDRs have a 16X label was because at the time they were made, there were no higher speed burners to test them.

It has also been said that they can burn just fine at, let's say, just 24X.

So why turn off buffer underrun when the CDR can burn perfectly fine at 24X with a 52X burner.
You say this is Nero's fault then? If so, why not just switch to lower version of Nero or use antother program which will allow 24x burning with buffer underrun protection?

It's not Nero's fault, the burner decides what speed is appropriate for the media you're using. Changing to a different burning program won't make any difference. You have three choices: (1) Buy different media, (2) burn the old media at a lower speed, or (3) disable SmartBurn. I don't think there is a way to disable SmartBurn without disabling the buffer-underflow protection, but I could be wrong on that.

If you have a LiteOn drive, there is a program on the LiteOn website (www.liteonit.com.tw) called SmartBurn.exe that will examine the media you have in your drive and tell you what the Smartburn speed limit is. This speed limit may be different from what the media claims to be rated at.

afty thanks.

1. Nero > Recorder > Choose Recorder... > Options... > UNCHECK: SMART-BURN Enabled

HOWEVER:

The function of SMART-BURN is automatically check the quality of the media, and will thus limit the
burning speed with some media, to ensure your recording session is successful. Disabling the
SMART-BURN function may result in writing errors as media quality is not automatically checked and the
burning speed will not be adjusted. Buffer underrun protection function is always activated and cannot be
disabled. We do suggest using a media which does support the maximum burning speed of the drive.

So Disabling Smart-Burn does not automatically disable buffer underrun protection but allows you to risc burning at higher speeds.

After disabling SMART-BURN, I was able to write at 52x (!!) on a 16x Fuji Made in Japan TY CDR disc.

[Nero > Recorder > Choose Recorder... > Options... > UNCHECK: SMART-BURN Enabled]

SMART-BURN enabled would have limited my writing speed to 16X.

The max burning speed is set by the burner's firmware. It is a good idea to upgrade to the newest firmware so you have the latest information on the max safe burning speeds for different media. You can run Nero Tools scandisk or media quality test to check for errors on disks burned faster than the firmware recommends. Usually the errors occur near the end of adisk, particularly disks over 74 minutes.
