And by the way.... Lite-on burners are great.
Yup i have the 52x Liteon and i couldnt be happier
I could.
I have the Sony 48x12x48, which is a re-labeled Lite-On, currently flashed with the most up-to-date 52x24x52 Lite-On firmware. Both before and after the flash, CloneCD cannot properly read audio subcode index marks. Reading a review of the Lite-On 52x model recently, they also mentioned that Lite-On wasn't as compatible with CloneCD as other drives, and that they had trouble properly reading subcode data to backup some protected PC game CDs, that use subcode data as part of the protection. They suggested using a different drive as a reader to make the image, like a Toshiba. There have also been many comments about media sensitivity with these drives, and burning at the maximum speed recommended by Smart-Burn, resulting in coasters. That has been my personal experience as well.
My Yamaha 6416S never gave me these sorts of problems, and it still reads audio subcode perfectly, and can burn on nearly any disc type. Sadly, it is only 6x speed, and at the time was having media issues, although an additional thorough cleaning seems to have fixed the problems that I observed at the time.
Overall, Lite-On's do deliver quite a bit of bang for quite a small buck, but they are FAR from "the best", either in terms of performance, features, or build quality. I think Yamaha is the only company still making truely high-quality drives, although you WILL pay more for them, that's not in question. I read a recent review of Plextor's 48x recorder, and they have switched to (IMHO, crap) belt-driven trays. They may be quieter, but nearly all of the problems I've had with cheapo CD-ROMs, have been with belt-driven trays. Plextor has sold-out, as far as their quality is concerned. They are now made in Taiwan and china, like all of the other cheap drives, and are now sold on reputation alone. So as far as a comparison between Lite-On and Plextor are concerned, I would probably take the Lite-On. But I still think that Yamaha makes the best drives, overall.
That's my $0.02, anyways.
