Updated on October 8:
I scored four more in another Staples B&M. If anyone want the scan of the receipt, PM me. I don't have a web server so I can't host the image. I bought all these burners at Staples in Boston area. The SKU is 481954. The drive I got is LTR-40125S. It can be upgraded to 48x Lite-on which supports Mt. Rainier.

A Staples sales rep and I shared the last two in my local Staples. It should be a Lite-on OEM drive as there is a SmartBurn sticker on the box. No SKU. YMMV.

That is hot !
Better than the Sony 40X deal since this is LiteOn.
And no rebate too.

It is a clearance item. No sticker with SKU number on the box. I can only find UPC number on the receipt.

I scored four more in another local Staples store during the lunch break today. The Staples sales reps were astonished to see the price when it rang up at $27.50. Now I can make sure that each of my relatives has one lite-on. The SKU is 481954. I opened the first drive I bought several days ago. It is LTR-40125S! I will flush the 48x Lite-on firmware to make it 48x.

Thanks! I got the last one in my local store. There were none on the shelves, but a clerk (who actually knew something about computers, and had bought a drive for himself and one for his roommate) told me that one was in the back. A customer had come in, picked up the wrong drive by mistake, and returned it. I considered asking for an additional "open box" discount, since the outer shrink-wrap had been removed, but why be an a$$ when it's only $27.50?

Interestingly, they had another (slower) Buslink drive on sale for "only" $69.90

Just hit 2 of my closest Staples. Had the slower Buslink for $69 and a Verbatim for the same price.

They were Mill Creek and North Creek Staples in Woodinville/Bothell WA.

I installed and tested one drive I bought earlier. There were some problems with it. It had trouble in burning Imation/Philips (CMC Magnetic OEM) CD-Rs! It was working fine for Memorex (TY OEM) CD-Rs. Everytime it failed, Nero hang there and the CD-RW kept running. I was force to reboot my computer. The OS for my computer is Win XP Pro. The version of Nero is 5.5.7.3 which I installed from the bundled CD-ROM. The firmware version is zs03 which is also the orginal version for 40x Lite-on. I tried by upgrading firmware and/or Nero many times but the problem is not solved. I will return the drive to Staples. The drive I tested was made in February 2002. I never have similar problems with other Lite-on OEM (Verbatim brand, Cendyne brand) drives I purchased before.

Can anyone share which 48x firmware to use with this?
Would there happen to be a website discussing this?

Thanks.

Check out this forum about Lite-on:

Firmware:

I am wondering the problem with one of my 40x Buslink is due to overclocking it to 48x. I tested second Buslink under 40x. It is working well. I would rather stay in 40x. The latest versions of firmware for 40x lite-on also supports Mt. Rainier. With latest firmware upgrade (version ZS0N) the burner can work under P-CAV mode not Z-CLV mode.

Seatidex:

Quick question. Was the firmware in the buslink actually the liteon firmware? Or should I say does the drive come up as a Liteon drive? I haven't installed it yet so I'm not 100% sure. If its a liteon I could use the Windows firmware loader thats available, if not I'd have to use the Mktflash program via dos.

TIA.

kgatwork,

At first, check the retail box. If there is a SmartBurn icon on the right side of Nero Burning Rom icon, it should be a Lite-on drive. If it has Justlink icon (or any other icon or no icon), it is NOT a Lite-on. Secondly, there is a model # LTR-40125S on all 40x Buslink cd-rw drive I bought. It is shown as Lite-on 40125S drive with Lite-on firmware version zs03 under Nero out of the box. It is a 100% lite-on drive. Unlike Verbatim brand drive, you don't have to flush it using Lite-on firmware in order to make it a Lite-on drive.

Thanks, I've got the Liteon. I just wasn't sure if buslink did what verbatim did with the firmware. This is good, now I can use the windows flasher and try flashing directly to VS02 or VS04 (48x) firmware without the intermediate step of fooling the verbatim firmware.

Thanks again!

I can hardly believe it, but I just scored one of these at the Staples in NorthEast Phoenix (Tatum and Shae). If there are any locals reading this board, they still had 2 more in stock! I would have bought them but my wife would have killed me! I got mine for $19.63 after the $10.00 off $10.00 giftcard they sent my business last month!!

Thanks for a SMOKING DEAL!!!

Nice! I hit the 3rd Staples near me, and no luck. I've hit up Mill Creek, Woodinville/North Creek, and Lynnwood (WA). The Lynnwood had one of the Memorex drives, but wasn't marked as clearance. Plus it was an open box and I took a peek. Looked like someone might've pulled a swap-job on it.
