But how do you set up Time Capsule as a NAS?

I can't find anything close to mentioning NAS in the manual setup. I've got everything updated (lion, airport, TC firmware) so I am ready to roll. But how the heck do you set it up as a NAS?


Btw, a side question. When I do succeed at setting it up as a NAS, can TC back up my macbook air even if I am in starbucks or library?

Inquiring mind needs to justify the $300 price tag now.

Can't you just connect to it and drag and drop files?

I have my TC setup that it's only for TM backups. I did connect a 500gb USB drive to it and use that as a NAS.

And no, Time Machine will not run if you are not connected to your Time Capsule using either wired or wireless, in other words you have to be on your own network for it to work.

Okay. So the Time Machine can only backup on my own network. What about file sharing? I should be able to access the file on Time Capsule anywhere in the world, that what NAS is for, right?

"This tutorial assumes you are using your Time Capsule as an NAS, not as the router. It’s possible it would work when in use as a router, but I didn’t give that a try."


Well, I am using it as a router as well. So mid-way through it, I started getting lost (the TCP & UDP part).

It shouldn't be much harder, just go into TC and open the ports he suggested. Here's his guide on port forwarding on Airport Extreme.
