Butter: Fridge or Counter?

Besides, there have been other threads with more replies than the original "butter", it's nothing special anymore. If I find it in a refridgerated storage device at the grocery store it goes in my refridge. Why would the store waste money keeping items cool if they didn't need it?

2/3 of the brick goes in the fridge, 1/3 of it goes on the counter.

I HAVE had butter go a bit rancid on me but it takes a LONG time... 2 weeks at least.

When and under what circumstances. I've left butter out for over a week during the summer and other than it being soft it doesn't taste any different than if it were in the fridge...it just spreads easier.

i dont usually keep butter out for spreading on things, so i keep it in the fridge as usually any butter I use is used for cooking or baking.
