I got one of the Sigma's 9MM last month and they had the same promotion. I doubt if you find any cheaper price than Academy's at $299, the local gunshops all wanted $369. It is a dynamite deal!!

that allexperts.com review is exactly my experience with the sigma. misfeed and jamming with every type of ammo. it turns out that it is almost impossible to return a new gun, you can only send it in for servicing, which doesnt help. from my experience - stay away from the S&W sigmas, even with 2 free magazines.

eh, I'm glad to read that review. The prices on the Sigma seemed too good to be true, and I guess they are.

Guess I'll have to save up for the real deal (Glock).

I have had a Sigma 9 for 4 years now... probally 4k rounds though it and it has never misfead for me other than one time of bad ammo and another time it failed to extract twice in a row...when I got a chance to look at it the extractor was chipped. I called S&W they sent me a prepaid Fedex label and then paid return shipping.

You truly can't beat the Sigma for what it costs. I used it as a first handgun to make sure I truly liked shooting HG's (grew up shooting rifles and trap). I would buy another S&W in heartbeat if they made anything I actually want to buy (I've become an HK zealot in the meantime).

You show me any other manufacterer that not only has a lifetime warranty but will pay for shipping BOTH ways.

Many people beat up on the Sigma but I've had nothing but good experiences with it and I would certainly bet my life on it as it was my first carry weapon since retired.

The only thing that I think glock has over the sigma is that everybody and their brother makes accessories for the glock.

Got my two 17 round magazines in the mail today-it took about 4 weeks to get them. I spent a lot tof time researching the Sigma series before buying and there are mixed reports on it for sure. If my life depended on it every day, I probably would have bought something else, but for casual fun shooting I still think it is a bargain.

You're in california, so you can have it shipped to you. Only a licensed dealer. Check www.gunbroker.com for a list of dealers near you that might do it for like 50 bucks.

Otherwise, I don't know the shops down there. Up here in Sacramento, there is a shop advertising the MP 9mm and 40s&w version for 399.

EDIT: Shops are better if you want them to help you with it. Judging from your question, you're a new shooter.

Its not just californina...you will have to go through an FFL for ANY handgun purchase from out of state. I don't know but private face to face sales *might* be legal in the peoples republic of california but I'm not sure.

50 bucks for an FFL transfer??? You have to be kidding me. It takes an FFL about 5 minutes worth of work to do a transfer. I pay $10 for my local dealer and another 5 for the NICS check. So 5 bucks plus 10 per firearm. If 50 is the going rate for 5 minutes worth of work I'm moving to cali and getting my FFL!

As mentioned Gunbroker is a pretty decent place to look. Its like ebay for firearms. As with ebay do your due dillgence and research the seller's feedback.

A transfer from out of state means you'll pay no sales tax (don't let the FFL who does a transfer tell you otherwise, if they try to its a sign to find another dealer) buy you will pay transfer and shipping fees. On an expensive firearm it is almost always better to do a internet purchase...on cheaper firearms (sigma falls into this category) find the best price locally and buy it. I'd pay no more than 325 for a sigma...I paid 289 for mine back in 2003.

Sigma for 289 from Gunbroker is an example of the going rate...paying much more would be mistake. Shipping is 18.50 plus figure 25 for the FFL tranfer brings us to a grand total of $333.49 to buy that particular sigma...use that for your point of reference locally for an "out the door" price.

Private party (aka Face to Face) sales are ILLEGAL in California, even between family members.

And CA has a law stating that FFLs (gun dealers) MUST collect sales tax on out-of-state purchases. Effectively, the dealer is buying it and you're buying it from him. That's how they get around the Constitutional limitation which is supposed to prevent states from regulating interstate commerce (the reason out-of-state internet sales are not subject to state sales tax.)

The pointless gun laws were the biggest reason I left CA.

I almost did not reply because I assume you are trying to start a flame war; and this is a little OT.

Please do some research on Glock prior to putting their firearms on the same plane as S&W, or most other handgun manufacturers for that matter. I do not even own a Glock (they just don't fit my hand well). However, I certainly respect their superior design and workmanship.

Seriously? State law requires them to collect sales tax? I stand by original statement "the peoples republic of california". I would think that federal law would trump state law in that the federal government calls it a "transfer" not sale.

If you think that was an attempt to start a flame war your sense of reality is warped...see words in my post like "I think"...see here in the united states we are all entitled to our opinions. I was stating MY opinion which is that the review posted is not accurate in my experience.

Is the glock built better than the sigma?...maybe. Do I care?...Not really. Do I have anything against glock?...no, they're just not for me. I stand by my statement that the sigma is an excellent "first" handgun. I wouldn't want to go drop $600 bucks on a firearm to find out I didn't like shooting.

I just purchased a Sigma 9mm from Gallery of Guns. Their Gun Locator will tell you what local dealers either have the gun you want in stock, or can order it.

After the fee's and everything, I picked up the Sigma for just under $350.

Yea, California sucks. Actual FTF is illegal. For private party transfers, you gotta bring the gun to an FFL, pay his fee ($25 is standard for background check + whatever he wants) and then come back after the 10 day waiting period to pick it up.

Going in half an hour with some coworkers to pick up his HK USP tactical and I might pick up an MP9.

The lunancy of handgun laws in your state never ceases to amaze me. 10 waiting days? Man you have to be kiddin'. Here in Florida I can walk in with my ccw permit and walk out with any handgun I desire. Of you course you'd have to have a "shall issue" ccw law...and we know that will never happen...completley OT, but I find it interesting that one of CA's biggest firearms opponenets (Feinstein) feels that she is important and responsible enough to have a ccw.

Tell your friend Nice choice on the Tac...I have one myself =) How can be buy a Tac...I thought it had to be registred as "assault weapon" because of the evil threaded barrel. Is it one of the chosen few registered as an AW before CA's ban or a Tac minus the threaded barrel?

I'll leave it on this note: its still safer to hunt with Cheney than it is to drive with Kennedy.

Minus threaded barrel. I handled the MP and really liked it. The way my thumb wrapped around the backstrap under the beavertail felt very good. I liked it even more then the HK P2000 I've been eying so much. I'm coming back this weekend to start the 10 day process. Today is the last of the 30 day limit from my last purchase, the Sig P229 da/sa non-rail.

EDIT: WHoops. Made a mistake. He has an elite, not the tactical.
