Buy a Plasma TV or Not??

Any plasma owners out there care to give any advice. Like where to buy one, brands, features to look for?

I only have $1500-$2500 to spend. So I won't be able to get a top of the line $6,000 model. A local
big box store American Electronics and Furniture has a 42" Plasma for $1999.99 but I do not know
the brand, model and what not. Just beginning to shop for this.

If you have the money, go for it. I'd make sure to do my homework and pick out a very reliable one, though.

Like I said, I know I can't afford a HIGH-END $6,000 set but I've seen several sell for $2500 or less. Especially
used but I prefer not to buy used unless its a real good deal from a trust person/business.

A local store here has a 42" model for $1999.99 and I know gateway is running deals on their 42" plasma. Just not sure on the quality of those 2.

use your cash for a very nice hdtv...

edit: do plasmas even support the resolution that hdtv's offer? (thats why i suggested purchasing an hdtv instead of a plasma)

I would prefer HDTV. I thought almost all plasmas were HDTV ready? Guess not.

I wouldn't bother with a plasma, LCD, or any of the other new technologies. The sets are still way too overpriced, and the technology is still in its infancy.

I would consider a two thousand dollar TV an investment, and I wouldn't want to buy something that'll retail for half that in a few years with better picture quality.

Why not a large widescreen CRT HDTV?

With such a budget, you would be better off buying a CRT-based rear projection television. $2500 will get you a damn nice Mitsubishi 65" set. Why anybody would spend 2 grand on a tiny 42" monitor is beyond me.

In my opinion, you're best options are:
1) entry level front projector (Optoma H30 and Infocus Screenplay 4805 would be a good bet for well under $1500.
2) big screen CRT RPTV. $2500 will buy you an awesome 65" Mitsu or Panasonic monitor.

What will you be using this TV for? Gaming, movies, etc?

I already got 2 good CRT TVs. Their not HDTV but I want something 42" atleast and skinny/wall mountable. So plasma is the only one that will work.

Sounds like the money is burning a hole in your pocket. If you've already got two TVs and the one you want is out of your budget, then I'd save the dosh or buy something else.

Na once I decide on the new TV, one of the other TVs will be sold.

The main reason I want a plasma is the picture quality and the fact it won't takeup any space.

I hate how projections look like crap if your standing up or looking at an angle.

The Dell, and most likely the model you are looking at, is EDTV. As I found out in another thread EDTV only "projects" in 480p, which is not the same as 1080i HDTV. Or something like that.

Don't waste that much money on something low-end. Stick it out until LCDs are big and cheap.

Who buys plasma for the picture quality? Especially an entry level model that is reknown for it's less than steller quality.

If you cared about picture quality, you would get a good CRT front projector and mount that sucker to the ceiling with some heavy duty bracing (it will weigh over a hundred pounds). Get a quality 16:9 screen over 100". Instant home theatre.

A good CRT based unit, front or rear projection, will have superior picture quality over any plasma this side of $10,000. Who is going to watch a movie at >45 degrees from the screen? Sounds to me you are more interesting in buying a showpiece that will wow your neighbors.

Its the size of the big projections and I don't have the space to be mounting stuff in my ceiling with 100inch screen. From the Plasmas I've seen they have great pictures but I'm not an expert.

Also I will be using this alot for xbox/ps2 gaming. That isn't good for a projector or a projection tv is it? I heard it burns the bulbs out quick.

I've had no problems with my XBox on my Mitsu 55" HD Widescreen. I think a lot of that talk is BS.

Then get a DLP projector and a screen. As long as you can control the lighting in the room there won't be any problems.

EDIT: Many projectors allow you to mount them above or in-line with the screen's normal.

It would be silly to buy a non-hdtv plasma.... It's just a regular tv, but skinnier... Go for a nice 36" Sony CRT HDTV. Like an XBR.
