If memory serves me there are two slot1 form factors. The early one was for PII ~400 SECC1 processors and the heatsinks would fit a slotA Athlon but usually was not heavy duty enough to cool the hotter slotA. The other slot1 was SECC2 and would not fit earlier slot1 or slotA CPUs. The slot 1 HSF at package2you is for SECC2 CPUs so it will not fit slotA. You can find slotA HSFs at some of the surplus computer parts websites.

Yeah, I'm in on this deal too and am really hoping that Buy.com comes through on this one. However, I decided not to purchase CPU and fan yet, because sadly I know how Buy.com has performed in the past. Let's all cross our fingers!!!

FYI, I sent an E-mail to ECS tech support with a few questions and got an impressively quick response...

>There is no BIOS update for the K7ASA, the fastest CPU we tested is 850MHZ, it
>supports PC100 SDRAM and the AGP slot supports 2x mode.

Meanwhile, my order status still shows "Sent to Warehouse", but it's early on the west coast so we'll see what the day brings.

Yeah -- and my status says "Sent to Warehouse" at 10:00AM (PST)... still. Been almost 2 days at this status, and buy.com states on their website that computer hardware usually ships within 24 hours.

I don't want to sound impatient, but I'm used to a little faster service from this level of etailer.

UPDATE: it's 4:00PM PST now, order still at "Sent to Warehouse" status... over 48 hours now at that status. Left a message for customer service.

I bought one of these boards and have everything we need except the processor....

I started to IM a couple of people for more advice (everyone has been VERY helpful at AT) but thought this might be just as appropriate.

So, what type of processor will this MB take (maximum) and should I get an 800, 850, or whatever the ones that are called "Thunderbird" or the like.

This is my first time building a PC and I want to maximize my efforts for my kids.

What is the difference between a Slot A Athlon (Athlon 850MHz with 3DNow! (K7) - OEM) and a Athlon Thunderbird at 850 (Athlon 850MHz 256K SlotA Thunderbird w/3DNOW - OEM) I found at one of links in this thread, except $30+ dollars???

I see one person is going to use an Athlon 850 "Thunderbird," and another has a 950, but their tech says that the MB has only been tested up to 850 - is anyone worried?

Sorry for the intrusion and so many questions but I want order a processor ASAP, so my teen son and I can have a weekend project next weekend.

Thank you all in advance!

[Edit] This board uses the AMD750 chipset which, unlike the Via KX133, DOES support Thunderbirds as well as Classic K7 Athlons.

A Thunderbird 850 sounds like a good bet if you can find one at a good price, since the board has been tested up to that speed.

I have a classic 950 and I'd be a little happier if ECS would have told me it's been tested on this board, but I did a Google search and found posts from people who seem to have used this combo so I'm not *too* worried. The classic 900 & 950 CPUs run at 1.8 volts, compared to 1.6-1.7 volts for those up to 850mHz, so I'm hoping this motherboard supports that.

If the combo doesn't work, I guess I'll be auctioning off the parts separately on a website located in the East Bay. That is, if I get the board in the first place. It still shows up as "Sent to Warehouse".

This has been normal lately for buy.com clearance deals. Clearance items are usually shipped by a third party supplier and could take up to a week. The "Sent to Warehouse" status on your buy.com order may not change to shipped until after you receive the item. This happened to several of us who ordered a barebones system several months ago.

zettler. Got your PM and am working on a response. I keep getting side tracked back in to Hot Deals forum.

My order also shows: "sent to warehouse." I emailed buy.com and here's the response I received today from CS. Not sure what this means, but I think I'll hold off on ordering the cpu:

Thank you for contacting us at buy.com, the internet superstore.

We are responding to your email regarding order #XXXXXXXX.

We are committed to delivering products on time. Unfortunately, we
experienced an unforeseen delay in shipping the products from your
order. We will send you an email, once your product ships.

On Sunday Night I got a message from Buy.com customer service titled "Still looking..."

...
"We are still working on shipping the following item(s) from order #XXXXXXXX.

You will not be billed until your product actually ships. If you wish to cancel your order for this item, or if you have any questions, please visit customer support or let the buy.com eXpert below answer your order questions. "
...

Incidently, the link to customer support in this e-mail doesn't work -- and the buy.com "eXpert" is completely worthless. Oh, yeah, I WAS ALREADY BILLED too.

Sorry guys, this hot deal is turning into THIS:disgust:

I got the same email titled "Still Looking..." However, the link to customer support works for me, and I have not been billed yet. This will really stink if it doesn't come through because I already bought a CPU.

I couldn't wait - so I cancelled my order. Does that mean there's a K7ASA for sale now?

Anyway, I went to Package2You and bought a AMD 700/motherboard/fan/heatsink for just under $70 shipped.

Moving on...

OK - It's been a few days -- anyone actually get a SHIPPED status yet?

If not, it's probably time to think about other options. I've looked everywhere and can't find a reasonably priced "SLOT A" motherboard anywhere. All I find are aged premiem boards for $80 here and there from questionable etailers.

Guess it's time for me to put my AMD 500 on eBay...

I, for one, am going to stick this out b/c I'm in absolutely no rush. I'm going to wait as long as possible to make buy.com go good on this deal. I just send a rather nasty reply to their generic "Still looking..." response all of us have been getting. I'm tired of big companies thinking they can miss lead consumers just to get them to their page. If buy.com doesn't do good on this deal they will have lost my business, my companies and whoever else I can reach. :|

What motherboard did you get?

I don't see a Slot A motherboard for sale at their site.

I also only see a 700mhz Slot A processor. Which means you couldn't have gotten the right motherboard for it. ??????

Because of this, the product has been automatically cancelled from your
order.

We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. Please note you will not

Well here we are over a week later, and I finally broke down and wrote to customer service to see if I was ever going to get this. Sure enough, I got the exact same reply Mallow just posted.

It's been a while since I ordered anything from Buy.com. In fact, last time I did business with them, they had 24-hour toll-free customer service, helpful CSR reps and everything worked the way it should. Well it sure looks like this company has plummeted from first to worst in just about every way.

First of all, orders just sit in limbo on their site until you write and kick Buy.com's butts to remind them something is supposed to happen.

Secondly, it's impossible to get any sort of human service any more. There's no phone number at all, toll-free or not. Their pop-up "Expert Assistant" or whatever the hell they call it is completely useless and just makes it hard to navigate to an E-mail screen. Then when you finally do find out how to reach somebody by E-mail, it's like communicating with a brain-dead robot. All they know how to do is cut and paste stock answers that are designed to avoid giving you a straight answer until they finally cancel your order without a valid explanation.

Thirdly...did anybody here get one of these boards? Anyone at all?? I'll bet not, because I'll bet they never had any to begin with. It looks like a classic example of false advertising, designed solely to bring customers to their site. Call it what you want - bait & switch or whatever - I call it total B.S.

BYE, dot-com.

You're right - I bought the WRONG PROCESSOR from Package2You So I ordered a 1.4 Athalon from Googlegear for 80 smackers. I'm going to sell my SLOT A chip on eBay soon.

This was my find -- sorry it ended up throwing up on us! :S
