Still, $50 off $51 at buy.com will just about make up for the Connect3D 2GB thumb drive fiasco of last year.

Interestingly, this is one of those few cards that's not available to Wisconsin residents. I'm curious what the real deal is behind it, but if the rather loose state law here doesn't allow it, I'd stay away from Revolution. Just a thought; could be Wisconsin law is silly.

I certainly do not need or want another credit card. On the one hand, $50 is tempting. On the other hand, too many open credit accounts can have a negative impact on your credit score. Everyone should keep that in mind before applying for an extra credit card that you don't need and don't plan on using.

Here's some info on it. It's started by Steve Case (AOL fame) Revolution

Keep this on topic please. if you feel the need to thread crap, don't.

i signed up and got Smash Bros Brawl and a wii nunchuck. The $50 off was instant, so my total purchase was $30 (50+20+10 shipping/tax - 50)

I'll pay off the card in a few days and cancel it once my order arrives.

Any Credit Guru's out there? This seems like a nice deal - free $ 50 spot. When does the negative outweigh the positive in the big picture? Like if I have 5 CC's already (no real balances) is this only going to hurt me - and hurt me worse than $ 50 on my credit score, lol?

This talk of credit impact must really be taken into context (if one isn't a deadbeat).

When I was buying/selling full time in the Mercata/VA era, I had 50 different visa/mc accounts. Since that time (1999-2000) I have had over ***250*** credit cards. I have never had more than 15 open accounts. I signed up for every money off deal out there. Depending on which service rates me, my credit score ranges from 790 to over 830. Now, in 20 years, I have never had a single late payment, so my results might be atypical, but I have never seen my score go below 770, even at the height of my "swindling". The number of account I had open, and the number of closures of accounts, had almost no impact on my score, and I kept track. Like I said though, my results might be atypical.

Thanks that's the kind of info I wanted to hear. Like one more isn't going to really break the bank if you're not a stiff and you don't do this with a hundred cards this year...... And thanks for the link in your sig. Good stuff.

is there a way to check your credit score for free?
free and legit one?
I'm kind of getting worried too since I have few cards that I never use and plan on just canceling them.
Including this one after I get my item from buy.com

Each credit bureau is to provide you a free credit report each year (depending on the state you reside in). I personally use annualcreditreport.com. Keep track and get a report every 4 months.

DO NOT sign up for this deal ! Revolution Card (formerly Gratis) is a joke of an outfit. Not only that but that have a "scheme" to recover these promo $'s they are spending to lure in new accounts.

The "scheme" is this - when you make a payment to your account, at first they accept the payment, then a few days later they do a "Payment Reversal Adjustment", in effect negating your payment. You receive no notice of any of this because their systems are a joke (perhaps on purpose). Just like you receive no billing if you sign up for "paperless" - no email, no nothing, it's up to you to know when your payment is due and how much. But it gets better. After the reversal of your payment, they nail you with late fees. At this point they say I owe them $70 in such fees when in fact I attempted to pay my account in full for the one purchase I made with their lousy card.

I called Revolution to find out WTF was going on with them. As I was passed from one rep to another up their chain of command I got a different story each time.

# 1 - I was told I had keyed in my bank routing and account numbers incorrectly. When I asked how this was so when they had actually received the payment, then reversed it themselves, I got passed on to the next rep.

# 2 - I was told my bank refused the payment and given the error code from my bank, R03.

At this point, I called my bank to see WTF was going on. They had never heard of such a code. They then did an extensive investigation in to the matter and found that there was NO record of any error on my part. They were able to verify this via the ACH, whatever that is. As best as I can understand, this is some sort of electronic clearing house where checks, etc. are sent and processed.

# 3 - Armed with this info, I called Revolution again. After almost an hour of arguing with several reps I got to a Supervisor who finally admitted to me that the problem was due to my bank account number beginning with a zero - that their system could not work with such an account number and that when they received payments from accounts that begin with a "0" that they must leave off the "0" when processing. So, no wonder the payments wouldn't process. They also readily admitted that they had known of this problem "for some time" and that they didn't have a fix coming any time soon.

Back to my bank where I had a certified check cut to pay Revolution what I owe them, sans the $70 in late fees. My banking rep also wrote a nice, nasty letter to them, which I included with the payment as well as my own letter demanding a receipt for "Payment in Full" as well as cancellation of this POS account.

Definitely not worth the hassles (and potential risks ?) for $50. I'm sure some/many will forego this warning so good luck to you, at least you had a warning. And if you do take the plunge, at least make sure not to pay via an account which begins in a "0" (electronically or via paper). Good luck on that front too, as many accounts begin with a "0", I know all (3) major banks I deal with use "0" as the first digit of all their accounts.

Wow. I'm monitoring this thread a bit. That *is* a nightmare. Not even worth the risk of that kind of crap....I'm back on the other side.

I used the card with no issues at all.

Have you tried making a payment yet ? Hopefully your account(s) don't start with a "0".

P.S. - Indeed, shame on BUY.CON, esp. since I alerted them to this problem. I signed up late last year (Dec.) when they had the promo for $20 off your first 3 orders using the card. Perhaps it's karma for all the VA and Mercata stuff I got in on years ago ...

Not sure about that, but I did C/P your post into a Revolution "Contact Us" form.

Did this two days ago, and I've gotten no response.

For me, that's a bad sign. They can't waste the time to protect their good name??

I have couple of the rev money accounts and I can tell you this. Get it for the 50 and then never use it again. Regardless of why you try to contact them you will not get a answer or a resolution to the problem.
Also, when you get your first bill? don't do anything on their online account management pages. Send them a check.
This company has a long way to go before it becomes a respectable card. But it's a pretty effortless way to get 50 bucks.

It's tempting, but given the anecdotes about Revolution's horrid customer service and ineptness, I'd hate to have an open account and run the risk of fraudulent charges.

Whoops. I didn't even notice it yesterday. You'd think they would remove the states mentioned from the list but no... I predict I get a pull on my credit report and a card in the mail but no $50 off. What a rip.
