Depends on how you consider "going against" your credit history...ALL credit inquiries initiated by a consumer (credit card apps, loan apps, etc) show up on credit reports...those "pre-approved" letters (requests not initiated by you) also show up as inquiries but DO NOT affect your score...
having too many inquiries initiated by you DOES hurt your credit rating or "score", although it doesnt necessarily mean you have bad credit, you might be getting denied b/c of lack of a long credit history, insufficient income, etc. even if youve never missed any payments...if you are in the market for a house or car (the big times when your credit rating is an issue) the lender will generally ignore the amount of inquiries and be concerned with prompt payments, debt/income ratio, etc...
