First USA is great.....

I have had one of their 'Egghead' Visa's since 97. Every month I get a $15 to $20 Egghead check. I save them for about 6 months and send them in, then use them all at once. My last one was sending in $110 of checks and getting the $200 Plextor 8/4/32 burner for $103 after shipping. I've received $760 of free product so far.

We use the Visa for ALL our purchases, then pay in full at the end of the month for no interest charge. No annual fee and one year extended warranty on purchases too. How can you beat it??

I'm getting the Buy.com card next...

First USA sucks the big one....we paid ever invioce the day after we got it in full and they were getting the mail (we certified one to make sure) before the due date, they then sat on an employee's desk where they were promply left until the due date passed and we were charged interest...they can lick me.

Yep, a couple of times they charged me interest for missing the due date. One time I know for sure I mailed it late.

It only took a phone call to their 800 number and told them I mailed it a week before the due date and they credited the interest charge.

Another plus: You can monitor your charges online at their website. Comes in handy when making alot of internet purchases to see when and how much your being charged.

Yeah Ibe heard of problems from ASSOCIATES and CAPITAL ONE so those might be 2 to avoid, looks like the review on First USA is mixed, but since they are so big they do have a reputation to uphold...

i would say i like amex and MBNA best, then discover then First USA

BTW, does everyone know you can pay your DISCOVER bill at your local SEARS STORE?? thats great if youre too late to mail in the payment sinc you can go in on the due date!

RandyPJ--i will check that out soon and look it up in OT,,thanks!

spec411--I don't know if you've been following the Shopss.con thread, but from comments there, it seems Amex and Discover do a find job supporting their customers in disputes. Enough so that I'll be getting an Amex.

I wonder if Anandtech would start an FAQ forum where people could write and add to FAQ's, such as cc info. Alot of people don't know you can dispute with cc's or don't do it in writing. Usually, just the mention of it is enough to get a vendor to come around.

Oh man AMEX has the best fraud protection around. Someone stole my dad's card # and tried to buy $4500 worth of computers at OfficeMax with just the CC # written down, and AMEX declined since the card was not swiped and called my dad and told him about it, they said that if it was him, to go back in to the same store and they would approve it, if not then they would cancel the card. They canceled the card and got us a new one within about 2 days (standard mail) And that no credit limit comes in really handy when you get into a bind...helped lots when we got into our car wreck with 2 laptops in the car. Great as technology is, it connot defy the laws of physics. AMEX is the only card that I would ever pay an annual fee to use, as I do now.

if everyone wants to get AMEX cards, dont get the ones with annual fees!! Get either the AMEX Blue card, or one of the Optima cards with rewards points or cash back!! I dont have the links but you can easily search for them...

in addition, Blue offers the Lowest Price Guarantee, which is GREAT for us tech shoppers..if anything you buy has a lower price, they will REIMBURSE you up to $1000 a year!! This is perfect since stuff usually gets cheaper as new models come out...Blue also offers Return guarantees, so AMex will take a product back and give you a REFUND even if the store policy is no refunds!!!! and i think you get 60 or 90 days!!!

spec411--dude, that is too neat.
1. Have you tried the LPG?
2. Surely, they have restrictions on some tech stuff?
3. Do they first try to pressure the vendor?
4. Let me guess, it's one per item? I can't go out and buy (4) PIII 700's for my systems, then hit them in a month for all of 'em?

Randy..im not that familiar on it, im just applying now after seeing other peoples recommendations on it and briefly checking it out myself on their site and talkign with CS, go to:

http://home4.americanexpress.com/blue/learnmore.asp

Read all the fine print!!!!

heres their info on the Lowest Price Guarantee:

"You?re assured the lowest price available on a covered item purchased entirely with an eligible American Express Card in the U.S. If, within 60 days of your purchase, you see the identical item in a printed, dated advertisement at a lower price than you originally paid, American Express will refund the price difference to you, up to $250 per item. Refunds are limited to $1,000 annually per Card account. For more details or to file a request for a refund, call 1-800-557-8317."

basically this is for finding a lower price within 60 days, and has a limit of $250 per item, up to $1000 max payout per year...It "seems" like if you bought 4 items you could get all them pricematched, but of course you'd need to find out for sure from Amex...there is some wording about "eligible" items so i dont know what that means (maybe they exlcude computer parts) but im thinking they are limiting it to products (ex. not auto repair, services, etc)

for the return guarantee:

"Return Protection offers you guaranteed product satisfaction on eligible items purchased in the U.S. entirely with Blue from American Express. When you try to return an eligible item within 90 days from the date of purchase and the store won't take it back, American Express will refund you for the full purchase price, up to $300 per item, up to $1,000 per Cardmember per year. Subject to Program terms and conditions. For more details, or to file a claim, call 1-800-297-8019."

they probably dont pressure the retailer, they just take the item back and probably donate it or something..all you need to do is explain in the return claim how you attempted to return and the retailer's refusal to accept a return ...basically you cant use it to avoid a restocking fee if the retailer does take returns, BUT, if you wait longer (since Amex gives 90 days for returns) clearly the retailer will not honor a return at that time and you'll have enough evidence to get your $$$!! and this is up to $300 per item , $100 per year max

PLUS, theres doubling manufacturers warranties, damage/loss protection (your shipped items are covered!!) , rental car insurance, etc. etc. ITS A REALLY COOL CARD! plus it looks awesome! And they have BlueLoot, which is the free rewards "points" program for $$ spent to earn rewards points...

the signup address is:

http://home1.americanexpress.com/apply/amazon/amazon_splash.asp
and you will get a $10 amazon GC for signing up!!

Sorry for the long post!
Amex rocks!

Great thread! I just signed up for the AMEX Blue deal, I think I'll go for the Visa-Buy.com one also (lemme read the fine print first - I work for a law firm, it's my job to spot potential loopholes).

I've been very pleased with both Discover and MBNA. Discover is great about disputes. You can call them up and tell them about the dispute and they'll instantly post a credit to your account...you do still have to send a letter. I called up to dispute a Staples charge and the CSR was great. She told me that they were getting lots of disputes about Staples and Staples didn't stand a change. She even called Staples stupid bastards About MBNA, I paid my MBNA bill late by about a week once (my only late payment) and they didn't even count it as late. No finance charge, nothing! Discover claims to have a similar philosophy but I'm not going to try it out.

This is a very informative thread. I definately say thumbs down to First USA (non-reponsive service). I cancelled those bozos. BUT, First Union has a great Visa card. I had to dispute the Shopss.con deal, and they were very helpful, etc.

A good place for credit card shopping is the oft-mentioned Gomez:
http://www.gomez.com (The eCommerce Authority).

CREDIT CARD CHAT ROOMS:
The best place is on Clark Howard's website, he totally rules:

Clark Howard has other threads on good deals for Long Distance, Home/Car financing, Credit Card deals, avoiding Scams, how to fight poor customer service, and other rule-full info.

<< I paid my MBNA bill late by about a week once (my only late payment) and they didn't even count it as late. No finance charge, >>

I used to have an MBNA Visa, and remember some fine print on some bills saying that because of my good standing with them, I can skip a month's payment without being penalized (other than regular interest). Guess it's their way of making more money from you, while staying on your good side. They gave about 3 chances a year to do this.

Just curious...

How many credit cards are too many? I just turned 20 years old. I have 3 credit cards all platinum I usually pay off everything at the end of the month (95% of the time) and I use my credit card pretty much as regular money. meaning if i go anywhere i charge it because it keeps a good record of where i spent my money (love online banking). plus it means just one bill at the end of the month to pay.

I haven't needed more than 3 credit cards so far and they continue to raise my limits on each. If 3 is too many I would cancel one of them. I want the best possible credit...

First USA sucks big time. I open an account in my wife's name
only about 2yrs ago so she could have credit in her name. The
interest rate was approx 12.4% with no annual fee. Well, about
1 1/2 yrs later the rate jumped to 18.58%. When I called them
they admitted that we (my wife) had never missed a pmt and always
paid more than the minimum. When pressed to answer why the rate
increased, they stated that they did a random credit check and
found some slowness on her report. Well, I told them that I wanted
a copy of that report because this card is the only credit that
she has in her name. After arguing with them for about 30 min
they found a way to reduce the rate back to what it was. They
had at one point said that the best they could do was to reduce
it to 16.9%!
Well, now the card is paid off. I never received the promised copy of the credit report. They have raised the credit limit. They
have called to solicit us for more of their services... I told them
to take a hike and am now on their list never to call...

Why need more then 1 credit card when it so hard to keep up.
I got freaked out when I couldn't find my card,
it was in my pocket instead of my wallet.
Phew.
With CheckCard you never have to worry about paying off
as it drawn directly from your bank and it made to be convenient for both your bank and you, and making those conventional credit card, or pay later type thing almost useless.
1 enought for me, don't need anymore to give me headache
just because you have more doesn't mean you have more money.
What the point of having to write check to pay to your Visa/mastercard company, what if you didn't see the bills,
or the mail got lost, wouldn't you owe them interest?
See I'm making a good point.
If you got 2 then that already too many, if you ain't got 1
then you definitely need one.

Hyper99 yes a lot of people get caugt up in spending money they dont have and charge too much,,if that is the type of person you are then credit card arent right for you...BUT there are HUGE disadvantegs to using debitcards/checkcards

You need to be familiar with the protections credit cards give you as opposed to debit/checkcards...if a company charges you w/o authorization or you have a problem with a purchase you ARE NOT PROTECTED with a checkcard/debit card, no matter if it says visa or mastercard on it...

Anyone who did the staples deal or any other deal and gets overcharged simply writes a letter to their credit card company and the charge IS REMOVED until it is investigated..with a check card your money IS GONE from your checking account..in some situations, the company overcharging the person CLEARED OUT THE PERSON'S bank account, and b/c the person got charge more than they expected, their other checks bounced, causing HUGE problems and late fees for mortages, car payments, etc,,,totally RUINING someones credit in an instant for something that wasnt their fault!

Credit cards also offer rebates, cash back, extended warranties, renatl car and travelers insurance, and up to 55 days of interest-free money if you do not carry a balance..money that STAYS in your bank account accruing interest!!

PLEASE do not make the mistake of thinking a debit card offers you protection when buying!! There have been many posts about people very sorry they used a debit card and the hassles it has caused!
