Should I buy the ECSK7S5A now or wait for KT266A and nForce? I know they'll be released soon, but it will probably take at least or month more before I can get them in shops where I live (KT266 first appeared in local shops a month ago).
I might buy the ddr-ram now as it's so cheap and some say the prices might rise when WinXP is released (because it'll require more ram).

I'm in the same boat as you, only i am going to build a system for a friend ( he wants it soon ) so i can't keep posponing !!!

It could take a long time before Nvidea or The revised Via mobo hit the shelfs here in Denmark

So i think that i'm going to go with ECS for now

I'd go with the ECS(I already have) it's inexpensive, fast, and easy to set-up, leaving extra$ for more ram, better vid, ect.

You will always be waiting for the next best thing.

I have given up waiting a long time ago because you will always be postponing.

Just get the ECS. Besides, the beautiful thing about the ECS is that it is so cheap! You won't regret ditching it in a few months when the latest and greatet does actually make an appearance on the shelves.

Memory prices won't go up because XP needs more ram, in fact they might go down. More demand lower prices.

Look at the previous releases of a Microsoft OS - 95, 98, NT, etc. Usually after their release, memory prices have gone up. However, this time it could be different. I'm sure quite a few people are running NT or Windows 2000 and these operation systems use pretty much the same amount of memory as XP will - I'm speaking from personal experience. Since the memory consumption is nearly the same, there should not be a big demand on memory.

All the more reason to add that extra gigabyte to your system, baby!

How much of a performance increase would I get byt buying the ECS board with 512Mb pc2100 ddr-ram compared to my current KT133A board (with a 1400, see rigs)? And would it be worth the much more money (4 times as much) to get 1Gb ddr-ram?

1. Buy ECS now. It's now, been tested for bugs and running good for many people. I will guarrentee you new motherboards (KT266A and NFORCE) will have bugs. NO Motherboard are solid. a) Since mobo are made by human, we are not perfect, therefore it's not perfect. b) hardwares are made by many different manufactures, there will be conflicts. c) ever heard of "Hardware Yield Factor?"
After the KT266A come out, you will still have to wait for a while for reviews of it to make sure they run good and stable. And so NForce waits will be longerrrrrrr...

2. More ram makes bigger diff? I THINK NOT!!! Performance is not the factor of more memory, it is about FASTER RAM. That is why we go with DDR and RDRAM and higher cache ratings. Most winblows only need 128Meg anyway!!! There will not be a different between 128Meg of ram and 1Gig of ram. UNLESS YOU WORKING WITH EXTREME GRAPHICS!!! Even then you will probably only need max 384Meg, No need for 1GIGZ...
a) WINDOWS will still crash even if it have all the ram in the WORLD!!!! And Yes, this includes all windows, EVEN NT that claims to have better memory management. You will need to reboot it after 2-3 week in winNT/2K/XP. You probably wont survive pass 1 week of intensive multitasking with Win9x.
b) And if you use linux? Why do u need so much ram? For the console? hell no...

Sounds like someone has RAM envy jk.

I personally use 512 MB of RAM cuz my comp doubles as a fileserver for the house, NAT for the home network, my photoshop machine, and my desktop burner for transfers from my laptop. As far as windows using memory, Windows+apps can use a lot of memory. Even with periodic cleaning of the RAM, the comp still has to make a swap file every once in a while but I've run this box stable and nonstop for a while without any problems since I added the ram, but I used to only have 256MB.
