Buy Friend's Droid X or Wait?

I'm currently using the Droid 1, which I've had since November 2009. It's performed pretty admirably for a long period of time, but is having trouble keeping up with some new apps, and multitasking nowadays.

One of my friends upgraded to the Thunderbolt and has offered me his Droid X for $150. I'm due for a new upgrade in July, and getting the Droid X off contract wouldn't affect anything. My question is, should I just hold out until July and wait for the new line of phones to come out, or spend the 150 now and use the X until July when my upgrade is ready? Basically I'm asking if it's worth it to upgrade to an X, which I'd use for maybe 3-5 months before upgrading.

I know the final choice is mine, but just looking for opinions.

I've had problems on just about every ROM I've used. I was using MIUI, but because it used some GB parts, text messages and calls would be missed. I was on Project Elite, but the same held true because it used GB parts.. Right now I'm on CM 6.1.2, but I can't get Wifi to work.

If you have a non GB ROM suggestion I'd be open to it. The Droid has too little memory to support the aggressive nature of GB's memory management.

Also, do you think I should hold out, or get the X? $150 is a pretty good deal, and if I don't like it, they go for close to $200 in ebay.

I also went from droid 1 to x, and definitely enjoy the x more. Considering that physical keyboards are becoming less common, it could be a good way to get used to touch screen only.

Well, if you can get something for your Droid, it won't be $150 net.

My 2 cents.

First, the Droid X is, from a hardware perspective, an upgrade to the Droid 1. However, you will lose a lot of the richness and choice in ROMs due to the locked bootloader. There's several good roms available, but nothing like there is for the Droid 1.

Second, I think 150 is too high a price for it. For 70 dollars more, you can get a Thunderbolt(under the right circumstances). And for 150 right now, you can get a new Droid X with a 2 year contract. If you've had you're Droid 1 since November 2009, you're in the same time table as me, and I'm eligible to upgrade to the TB right now at 220 from Verizonwireless.com.

In short, I would not buy the Droid X.

I was going to throw in the towel on GB ROMs for my D1 as well. Peter Alfonzo seems to have found a fix that works for the background task killing. I've been running his GPA14 for a week and I'm happy with it.

I have always had a rule - never buy from a friend or sell to a friend. It is a good path towards damaging a friendship.

$150 is nothing. I'd definitely jump on it as you're not due until July and then you can go back and sell it as well.

I'd say save your money. 3-5 months will fly by like nothing and you'll have more money in your pocket to get a better phone when the time comes.

You just went rambling about nothing that has to do with his asking.
How does buying a Droid X off contract for $150 has anything to do with buying a TB for $220 on contract when hes not eligible for an upgrade ??
And then you talked about getting a Droid X for $150 with a 2 yr contract when he can get a Droid X for $150 off contract.

I have a Droid 1 and am 3 months away from an upgrade. I would buy a Droid X (for cheap) only if I thought I needed to have something to tide me over until December or whatever, like if I knew a specific phone was coming out that I wanted.

Have you checked with Verizon? They've let some folks upgrade to the Thunderbolt early...

And what the heck, $150 is a fair price, you'll enjoy it and likely be able to sell it for near that in a few months. Although, won't Verizon hit you up for an activation fee?

I'd do it you can still get $75 out of your droid, and with $75 more you can get your friend's Droid X. In july you can sell the droid x for at least $125. You'd recoup all your investment and you'd be only out of a 2 year old phone.

Thanks guys - some good advice. I think I'm going to buy the Droid X and sell my OG Droid. ew915 had the same thoughts as me, once I upgrade to an LTE device on contract, I should be able to get 100-125 for the X and make all of my money back.

I'm in your same boat. My Droid A855 has RAM issues, even running a custom ROM and overclocked. I also rely rather heavily on it in certain situations, for my business and as an EMT, so random lockups, slowdowns and reboots aren't very tolerable.

I looked at getting a Droid X. Used pricing seems to be $200-$300 on CL/eBay. You should be able to sell your Droid1 for at least $100 on eBay.

$150 is a good price, which you should be able to get out of it again in a couple months if you can't wait.

But, have you logged into your MyVerizon account and checked the Upgrade section? I'm not eligible for "new every 2" until October and I can get a Thunderbolt for $219 with 2 year contract. I'm really close to jumping on that, but I want to look more closely at coming options like the Bionic and Galaxy S II.

I just checked my Verizon Account page and apparently I'm due for an upgrade now. The July I saw was if I wanted to use my New Every 2 upgrade (which doesn't give many benefits at this point as I only want a 1 year contract).

I don't want the Thunderbolt, because Battery life is extremely important to me. Given the Verizon Roadmap leaked today, I should probably hold off on buying the used Droid X and wait for the Incredible S (April) or Bionic (potentially May)...I'm itching for an upgrade from this Droid 1.

Should I go for the X at $150, sell my Droid 1, and then resell the Droid X in a few months? Or should I just suck it up and wait?

I just went from a droid 1 to x and its very worth it IMO. Much faster and love the screen size. Call quality is good as well.
