No US proof coins are plated after striking. US cents are made of copper-plated zinc but the plating is done prior to striking.

Nothing particularly special about the 1975-D coins (they aren't proof, by the way - no proofs are manufactured at the Denver mint). The 1943 copper cent is indeed very valuable but also the most faked coin ever. People take a 1943 steel cent and plate it with copper hoping it will fool someone. Testing with a magnet foils that plan.

Good catch!

Can I ask you coin questions in the future?

Actually I noticed to save money most if all new pennies use metal now and they just coat with copper. I noticed that when I passed a magnet through some change and it picked up the new coins, left the old. Even bigger coins all the way up to $2 ones. Makes sense though, if it was pure copper or another higher end metal the metal itself would be worth more then the coin! I think at one point they were talking about getting rid of pennies for this reason. The time, money and materials going towards making them is not even worth it.

Not only is the cost to manufacture a cent greater than one cent, the value of the copper in the older cents exceeds their face value. The government passed a law not long ago that banned melting of the cents (and nickels).

Alright, I'll go ahead and look stupid here... What's a fender washer? And why are the Buffalo nickles better?

Fender washer is a washer with larger outside diameter. It provides a larger surface area to prevent pull through under high load conditions. I was being funny about the whole Buffalo nickel - any nickel will work. They don't corrode and are thick enough to be adequately strong when you don't have a proper piece of hardware around. Just drill a hole in the center.

I am guilty of the nickels. Has anyone seen the price of nickel bar ? Seriously how can they expect people not to.
