Ok, this must be the millionth time this sort of question is being asked.
I have a budget of between 500 bucks comfortably stretchable to 700 and with a lot of strain upto 900. I need a good laptop to move between my apartment and any of several coffeeshops to write, download pdf files manage a couple of websites (which does involve some adobe illustrator kind of work) and listen to music. i would really love it if it can handle GIS software but that seems like a dream at that price. the truth is i have managed somewhat unhappily because of its bulk with a used thinkpad T21 for a couple of years but the screen has died on me and i want a lighter but somewhat rugged machine to use for about 3 years.
OK, i am seeing a number of options on the market in that range 500-900 but i am a bit bewildered about 1) the processor the celeron M is cheaper than the pentium. the amd is about the same price as the celeron. i hear that both the amd and the celeron exhaust the batteries too fast. but buying a laptop with any of the pentiums seems to mean i compromise on other things. i am a bit lost. is there some variable that i am missing here which will help me decide quickly ?
2) there are a bunch of ODM laptops like chembook, sager, gen x which give a lot more than a comparably priced product in the brandnames. but i am not sure if what i will be losing in the bargain.
3) and then there are things like: hp compaq v2309US for which i cannot find any reviews anywhere. the cnet review says it is 12 inch screen whereas the newegg website says it is a 14 inch screen. it seems like a lovely size and price with a pentium M. why isnt anyone talking about it ?
i guess, i am partly asking for some handholding here. will greatly appreciate any comments etc. till the end of this week by when i need to get done with this laptop purchasing madness and get on with other things in life.
thanks in anticipation.
