Get DocMemory, a free program to test the memory you recently bought for your system. It has a burn-in option too to make your memory work hard. Oh yeah, you can test the memory on your old PCs too.

It works on any system that can boot up in DOS. You can make a boot floppy disk and install DocMemory on it. (The download page only shows support for Dos 3.0 and Win 95/98.)

DocMemory Info and Download Page

It's made by CST (Memory Testing and RAM Diagnostics) and has gotten a good rating from ZDNet too.

I recommend this utility -- I've been using it for more than a year and it's been great.

It's goode stuffs. Fun to watch for a little bit, then it's a little boring, but you don't _need_ to keep your eye on it.

It's quite useful to us overclockers.

If you get someone to make you a dos or win95 bootdisk you should be able to run this from your floppy drive even if you use WinME.

I made my boot disk from 98, but I would think you can make a boot disk even with WinME if you rebooted in DOS mode and did some disk swapping (if you have 1 floppy. I actually have 2!)

Nice util..used it yesterday actually.

Why would it be helpful to overclockers? It's not stressing your system, just testing the memory.

After overclocking it is a good idea to fully test the ram to make sure it can handle it, of course, assuming that you adjusted the FSB in your overclocking.

I'm an idiot....well, maybe.

By default it chooses 16MB. The system I'm testing is a new Gateway P3-933 w/128mb sdram module.

If I set it to 128mb, it runs fine. If I set it to over 128mb, it freaks out part way through the memory count....

Oh well...all is good I guess. :0

Does anyone know of any shareware that can give specs to memory? Such as cas latency (whatever that is), etc.,?

Is it DocMem 1.45? Because 1.44 sees only the first 16M. But I'd rather use
MemTest86 because it once reported a ton of errors missed by DocMem and the other diagnostics I ran.

Bah, that's all BULL, it just writes 1's into memory, then reads to make sure that they are really 1's and not 0's, Symantec Norton Diags had this for years. To test your memory, you need a physical device (other than your PC that crashes if the memory is bad).

I've been away from the PC Arena for quite a while, so forgive one very naive question.

What physical device would crash before your PC?

Tried to return crucial 256 ram cas 2 1 month ago they had some errors in norton test. They suggested this utility (docmem) I must have done something wrong started the test left town for 48 hours came back and the dam thing was not finished (halfway thru). Any body tried this prog before on a 256 stick how long did it take? certainly not 48 hours?

dicktinsay,

I have only used that utility once a while back. As I remember it keeps going until you stop it.
