Currently have an AMD Athlon 64, 3000+ cpu, and Nvidia 6800 GT.

Was thinking about upgrading to the new Intel 8400 Dual Core 3.0Ghz and an Nvidia 8800GT video card....

Or do I wait a few months for the newer Intel Quad core, and the next generation of Nvidia chips.....

System is used for gaming....

Upgrade when you can. There will always be something better coming down the pike.

Now, because when you wait 2 months, you can once again start waiting for something new, and again and again. A q6600 and a 8800gt will be a HUGE improvement over what you have, and the new qauds aren't going to be that much faster then the q6600.

Depends if you need the improvements or not. When you need the upgrade, just do it and get the best bang for your buck. Technology moves so fast that the mentality of waiting will be cyclic forever.

Since you game, it's unlikely you'll see use of a quad core that's advantageous over a dual core in this generation. I suspect in a few years, but by then you'll probably be ready for another big upgrade. Save yourself cash and get the E8400 IF you plan on upgrading.

I can't tell you what to do, because it's your decision, but I had a very similar system to the one you described and I can tell you that *I* decided to upgrade now to what you see in my sig

The difference is rediculous.

Vista 64 runs faster than XP ever did, looks better, etc.

The computer feels like it is roughly 2x as fast. like 100% faster. which is probably not far from the truth...

800 fsb versus 1600fsb

3.0 GHz P4 northwood --> 3.6GHz C2D wolfdale

1GB DDR400 versus 4GB DDR2-800

storage is faster and cheaper

it's almost like... you can't afford NOT to upgrade! (j/k)
