i'm looking to buy a navigon 2100 gps.

walmart sells it for $98.00 brand new, and tiger direct sells it refurb for around $69 dollars.

all in all, with expedited shipping, tigerdirect will be under 90 bucks, and walmart will bring the total to around $110.

any thoughts on buying a refurb gps system, from tigerdirect or from somewhere else? ideally, I dont want it to breakdown on a roadtrip......and if it does breakdown, want to be easy to fix.

If you get the full warranty give it a shot, I have bought refurb things in the past that were fine, not a GPS though.

I bet it'll be fine. Hard to abuse a GPS when its just hooked up to your car

Hard to say. What's your experience with refurb stuff?

Mine hasn't been the greatest. Friends with a 42" TV had it go a week outside their 90 day warranty. And I just picked up refurb speakers today (thinking what could possibly be wrong with speakers?) and they wouldn't even power on out of the box.

In this economy 20 bucks can mean alot to someone, save 20 here 20 there over time it can add up.

does he need it right away?

check fatwallet slickdeals.
gps have been dumped at around 70 dollars for that level gps new since xmas. 100 dollar range should be 4.3" on sale. so his deals not particularly good regardless

Most of the time a refurbished item is something someone bought, opened the box, and decided they did not want or used once for a trip and returned it in working order. But the manufacturer cannot sell as new anymore.

I bought two identical refurbed sandisk mp3 players. One works fantastic, the other has a broken pause/play button.

bad is batteries age. refurb from when, who knows.

i buy lots of refurb stuff and have good luck with most of it, but not so much with a refurb gps. issue is, the refurb gps i bought has a battery that stopped holding a charge after 3 months. by then of course the 90 day warranty had passed. if the battery stops holding a charge, any time the power comes unplugged you have to redo all the settings etc.

anyway, i'd buy the new one.

for that price difference, i'd probably go with a new GPS and be covered by the double warranty on most credit cards.

In this economy if you are worried about 20 bux, you should not be buying a gps.
