TurboTax Basic has gotten the job done for us over the years... best I've seen on Basic is $20 at Target.

Basic is $19.95 at CompUSA but you don't get the free stuff with that one.

Do you have to buy a new version of Turbo Tax each tax year, or do they just release updates to update the forms and such?

I've used tax cut and turbotax in the deluxe versions and both are about equal now ( old versions of taxcut were flakey). Did turbotax do something about the spyware in this years version? Last year I switched back to taxcut because of all the controversy and won't buy it again this year unless they straightened it out. I actually perfer turbotax overall.

Yeah, has everyone forgotten about how Intuit tried to force that crap on their buyers? A lot of people swore them off forever for that.
I'm looking for a deal on TaxCut

WHAT free stuff are you talkking about?

All the offers you mention carry large MIRs - do do really think it's a good deal to pay an extra $10 over the basic edition and then to wait on over $100 for stuff you may not need in the first place?

db, I'm with you. I went TaxCut last year b/c of all the crap they tried to force on me and I was pleased with its performance. I will be sticking with them this year -- Intuit has tried to "apologize" for their transgressions, but that doesn't cut it with me.

Yes. A new version of any tax prep program is required every year since tax laws change year after year.

Intuit has stated that they're no longer going to implement their DRM/registration garbage this year like they did last year because so many customers complained/voted with their wallets. As far as I know, TaxCut will still be like last year which is great.

I think Intuit has lost many customers permanently. Several people I've encountered have swore off them and will only use TaxCut and Microsoft Money now. Intuit really screwed up last year.

I wonder if the same backlash will hit Symantec as well since they're now using a similar DRM/registration scheme on all their 2004 products (i.e. Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Internet Security, Norton System Works,... etc.)

I certainly don't consider $10-$30 MIRs as "large" and buy products all the time with larger rebates than that - all of which I receive. No I don't think it's a good idea to buy stuff you don't need but then I never suggested that - you did. Buy any or all of the FAR products you want - you have choices.

If you only want TurboTax Basic and none of the products that are FAR interest you, then this deal is not for you. I'm sure that other stores will have similar deals available.

ive been a loyal customer of TaxCut since 1995. i've tried turbotax and they both seem very similar if not the same thing with different pictures. taxcut is usually cheaper than turbo tax in most occasions, hence my preference for taxcut.

Office Max has Turbo Tax basic for $20, then you get Quicken Basic 2004 free after a $30 rebate with purchase of TT 2003... and you get free e-filing with any TT purchase after $15 mail in rebate.

C-Dilla is gone this year, I can vouch for that. No more questionable copy-protection to my knowledge.

Intuit and TurboTax can kiss my a$$! I used it for 6 years prior to last. Cdilla made me jump ship to TaxCut, and I loved it. I don't care if I get a deal or not, I will buy TaxCut again this year! I will never go back unless TaxCut trys something stupid like Cdilla!

Ditto. Screw me once - shame on you, screw me twice - shame on me. TT ain't getting a second chance (beside, uncle Sam already does that on an annual basis already anyway). Was a customer up until they try to screw with me last year with that crap. My $$$ going to TC for good so TC better take good note. Both software are on par now imo.

Intuit and Turbo Tax used to get my business every year for the last 6 years. However, they totally lost my trust when they implemented that hairbrained activation scheme. I was so incensed at Intuit that I even drilled a hole in the Turbo Tax CD they sent me. Then I sent it back to Intuit (at my expense) with an explanatory complaint letter included.

Of course, I then went with a competitor (Tax Cut) and was surprised to find out it was just as good as Turbo Tax, albeit cheaper. I'll be sticking with Tax Cut again, in spite of the apology letter issued by Intuit.
Nowhere in the apology letter does it rule out future attempts at another draconian copy protection measure, so I am still loathe to trust my tax info to Intuit.

Once trust is broken, it takes much time to rebuild. Personally, I'm taking many years off from Intuit products and waiting to see how the company conducts itself. Who knows, I may never even have a reason to come back.

Note to Intuit: Never give your customers a reason to try your competitor's product. They just might like it.

The basic version for $20 works for most people - so what's the point in laying out an extra $20 to become elligible to lay out another $120. If only one of those $20 rebates does not come through the thing will have cost you $50 for something that you could have had for $20. Oh well I guess to each his/her own...
