My sister-in-law is in love with a used Audi A4 and wants advice:

2006 A4 2.0 turbo, automatic tran, leather, sunroof
50000 miles
"new" tranny
new tires
Asking $9,900
Appearance- very clean

Any feedback for this car, beyond the usual generalities of avoiding used Audis?

My thoughts are- Why the new tranny, and the price seems too good.

edit: Yes, clear title.

Price doesn't seem that spectacular. I'm seeing a similar one for $10.5k from a dealer here in AZ. Some 2005's for under $8k.

I would assume the new tranny because the old one broke.

I went for a test drive in a few A4's before buying my IS. Two of them had issues with the manual mode not working on the auto. Don't know if that could be fixed by just replacing a sensor if you'd have to replace the whole transmission.

New trans at 50k is because its a POS Audi/VW car.

If they want a car they will take a lot of work/money to keep it working well then yep Audi/VW is a great car to buy out of warranty.

I'm still researching for my purchase and have checked on some sports sedans. iirc that year is one to avoid for the A4s.

You may want to check very thoroughly.

well it is getting close to the 10 years/100k km point where most cars begin needing occasional repairs and people who don't care much about cars just get a new one, at least here (lots of VWs around).
That'd be a reason for selling, but she shouldn't except 0 problems when buying used because it's at the point where problems begin.
Might be she're buying someone else's headaches.

I'd never buy a used car with an auto tranny, usually there's some issue that pushed the owner to sell.
The fact that he paid lots of $$$$ to replace it and is now selling anyway is weird and would make me suspicious.

I don't know specifics about the car, but I know somebody who has always had those and kept them for more than 10 years every time and had no problems whatsoever, but they were manuals.

I like VWs and never had problems with them but I can say I'd never buy one used, an old polo that was way past 10 years and had seen a lot of commuting had a door that almost fell off (due to slamming), the centralized unlocking system that broke (you had to insert the key in each door to open it or enter the car and open the other one from inside), the belt that had to be replaced, the clutch was worn. It was almost to the point where it would not be able to pass the trial without spending lots of money on it. On another one the transmission began to make crunching noises when changing gears.

Also the audi a4 seats are uncomfortable.

I agree with Jimzz except for the VW group bashing. Those cars are made for the European market, no need to hate.

The Dekra report says the Audi A4 is a pretty good used car though: http://www.focus.de/auto/gebrauchtw...-gebrauchtwagen-aller-klassen_aid_923560.html

The "new" tranny is unusual @50K. Quattro should have the ZF 6-speed tiptronic. Fronttrak has the CVT and those have been problematic in the past.

It's a 2.0 FSI so the following things would need to get checked/carefully watched: HPFP Cam follower, PCV, Diverter Valve, and Carbon Buildup.

Thanks all! This is good. I think I've managed to dissuade her from the Audi. ^_^

That tranny was replaced under warranty, by the way.

She dodged a bullet!

My accountant friend went through THREE A4s before giving up completely on Audi. In total, dozens of problems from mild (power windows not working, lights constantly burning out), to severe (two bad motors, two bad transmissions, one engine computer melted and had to be pried out, etc). These were all from 2006 to 2011 models ('06, '08, and '11 IIRC).

But but but... I've been told Audi/VW is getting better every year, they swear. Just one more.... :sneaky:

But yea the last one I did major work on was a POS from the start. Whats that one of the bulbs is burned out... but they all work I can see. Oh you want your ignition coils to not start to get flaky every 10k... sorry. You don’t want your head gasket to blow before 60k... opps.

Had another one that had a vacuum leak. Yet there was nothing obvious but the engine light was on. Shes spent hundreds trying to fix that and still no luck.

My dad has the 2006 A6. It's alright but like every other VW under the sun, it has weird electrical issues. The radiator fan went and there was a problem with the stereo. Thankfully both under warranty. It also runs really rough on a cold start unless you give it a little gas. Engine light's been on for ages.

Every VW I've come across has had similar weird quirks. We had one Golf that needed the same headlight bulb replaced twice, in two weeks. I've seen Jettas that have disappearing coolant. A co-worker's has a New Beetle who's car alarm goes off if she tries to lock it with the FOB. It's also had the engine light on for years despite nothing obviously wrong with it. She has a friend who's a VW mechanic and he can't find the problem.

Volkswagens/Audis are nice cars when they run but they do have a lot of maintenance issues. In the battle of German cars, it's BMW hands down. Driven them a lot and never had any problems with them. They're solid cars. You can get a used 3 Series, same model year, for the same price.

That's pretty much the truth. Accountant friend of mine ended up giving up and getting a 328xi, and now he swears by them. I have no idea why he bought an AWD 3 series in Texas, but at least he hasn't had any trouble with it so far.

We've had our 2010 for about 3.5 years now and it has been rock solid. The warranty will be up in November, so I'm expecting a total powertrain failure by December. We have about 45k on the car and it still looks/drives like new.

In all honesty, this car has been my second most reliable car next to the 1992 camry I had through college. That includes other toyotas, a mazda, a ford, a bmw, and a gmc.

Crossing fingers.

65K on my 2008 A4, only issues were 1. diverter valve broke and started leaking oil (replaced under warranty, known item in the community) 2. driver's side window is 50% failed, at a shop now getting looked at.

I don't like the auto trans though, wish I'd gotten a manual. Seats are pretty terrible.

Not sure what car I want to be looking at next though. The new WRX looks like the old one, bleh? I don't care much for the new 3 series styling (rear deck->C pillar just looks wrong to me somehow). Guess I should look at 2011 335i's? New S3 also looks good, but as everyone else will say "It's an Audi, don't do it!"

Edit: And before someone says that the new ZF 8 speed autos are good, no, no they're not. I'm driving a 2013 A4 loaner, and that transmission feels just as disconnected as my existing 6 speed auto. It's a little faster since it has more low end gearing, but it's still just a box of slush.

Is it the front wheel drive CVT model? Those transmissions are terribly unreliable.

We've got an 04 A4 quattro with the v6, no issues to speak of.

Like the CV going out and having it towed is "no issues"?
That and had to put a trans in your old A4 I see.
I think my definition of "no issues" is different than yours. :sneaky:

That engine is the older belt driven 2.0t. Among other things it is known for oil burn and the timing belts snapping randomly. The new ones have chains..

I have a friend with an 07 quattro 2.0 that has been towed out of her apartment three times and had the pistons replaced.

My a4 had its fuel injectors, catalytic converter and parts of the engine replaced all in the first 3 years due to failures

I would not buy a used Audi. Hell I won't even buy another new one. If you must get the v6 for the b7 model. Or save up for one still under warranty or a CPO

That's likely due to Audi's programming of the transmission and how it adapts to your driving style. It should wake up pretty darn fast once you start driving a little harder. If not, then Audi's programming sucks I guess.

Depends what transmission. Manual or Auto?

In general, Audi/VW makes EXCELLENT manual units. My B5 has one of the best manual transmission I ever had. Probably one of the better units VW/Audi ever made (compare to say.....MK4 manual/clutch). I had 2 Passats and each had 150k miles with almost double the horsepower/original clutch.

That's pretty amazing....

Auto's on the other hand.....I would stay away from.

Different car; the one you're referring to was my college beater '96 A4 with salvage title ( think I paid like $3-4K for it back in '02) The CVs going out was a function of my ignoring the ripped CV boots until all the grease flew out; second gear had bad synchos/detent since I bought it. Put about 30K on it over the 3-something years I've owned it, sold it for ~5K

My girlfriend's got a '04 A4 Cabrio; great winter/summer car (quattro with winter package/ convertible)

Holy crap I better get rid of my Audi with 120k miles before these problems start showing up 60k miles ago. Maybe I should have bought an Accord instead and gotten in on the class action lawsuit for their failed transmissions.
