haha, you were one of the "others". if you don't agree to let them check your credit they think you're just wasting their time.

i was already pre-approved by my credit union for the amount i wanna spend, so running a waste of my time and as far as i know, detrimental to my credit.

Did you tell him/ show him you were pre-approved.

no, i won't discuss any details before i know something as simple as the price of the car,

The price wan't on the Monroney or buyer's guide?

They didn't post prices anywhere, and since we test driving random cars, it's not like i looked them all up on time before hand.

I edited the post to include that I didn't talk numbers until I knew funds were available, credit was good, all decision making parties were present, trades involved, etc.......

I also didn't let people just drive random cars around but don't worry there are plenty of salesmen that will.

We had a pretty strict criteria on the kind of car we wanted, they only had about 3-4 models that fit it, so wasn't just random cars. We were looking at a car that we had said we had looked at before and were interested, just wanted a price. Your gonna tell me you wouldn't have given me a quote? We gave him a generic price range, which this car definitely fell on the lower side of our range. Obviously i won't be going back to this dealership and if you were my car salesman, you wouldn't have gotten our money either.

When I was 22 me and my sisters were contemplating buying my dad a new car. We were looking at the CLK320s ... I went to a mercedes dealerships and they had no problem letting me test drive the car and talk numbers for a bit. We ended up not buying the car but I can't believe the guy treated you with such disrespect. You should tell the owner ...

I feel like walking in there tomorrow with our check from the Credit Union and said you had a chance at this and that guy over there fvcked you for life.

Exactly. The saleman thought the OP looked like a waste of time that probably couldn't finance the steam off a hot lunch, and decided not to waste his time until the customer (the OP) showed that he was serious. The OP wasn't serious (or else he would have mentioned his approval with his credit union), so the salesman asked him to leave, as he runs a business not a babysitting op.

Biggest crock ever. Try to remember that Edmunds.com makes it business convincing people to buy their cars online, and not at car dealerships, eh?

Regardless, there are good and bad car dealerships, just like there are good and bad salesmen. My opinion is that only fools walk the lot, while smart people shop by picking up that absolutely amazing modern invention called the telephone and calling around.

Do that, and they'll school with your hot-headed emotions and pack you right into a car you can't afford at thousands over MSRP. Smart people don't think like what you just said. After all, why else would you actually go back unless you intended to buy?

I used to work at a dealership.

A lot of people waste our times. We know when a customer is going to buy or not.

If you wasted an hour of his time he would probably tell you to buzz off.

They don't make any money unless they sell.

By the way the salesman cannot give you numbers. He gives you the MSRP and if you want to negotiate someone else has to agree to it.
He can't just give you any price.

You did have to sit down however. You have to find out the MSRP for the discounted price you had and he had to find the same exact car on the lot with the same MSRP and he had to go to his sales manager to discuss the deal.

BTW what kind of car was this?

If it is a sports car he probably couldn't do squat for you and he knew he was wasting his time.

Nissan dealership:

Altima = huge discounts
Z = barely any discount (even if the salesman wanted to buy it - $500-$1,000 max)

actually I probably would have because within the first minute or so you would have been asked if you were there for our great financing offers or if you had secured financing elsewhere. As long as everything sounded legit and you weren't an obvious bogue I would deal with you.

I'm not saying the salesman was right but there are reasons for such actions even though he didn't seem to fully understand them and fvcked himself. Then again maybe not as your deal would have been easy which usually results in a mini. The only thing worse than a $500 hamburger is a mini.

Edit: but if you didn't seem serious I'd just wait on a buyer

My default answer to whether or not i am financing there is, "depends on what kind of deal you have to offer." How i intend to pay and whether or not i have a trade-in are my only cards and i do not play them with nothing on the table. I realize that the guy saw that i was young and possibly lacked funds to by the car. But i had indicated that we were interested in this car and that it was definitely within out price range. He could have gotten me some figure on the car, instead of blowing me off.

That is one of the biggest reasons to deal with the Internet guy or fleet guy. My last two trucks were bought like this because they will give you a price. My last truck was through a fleet guy. He had all the paperwork done by time I got there. I was in and out in 45 minutes or less.

OP, go to edmunds and read the section of how to buy a car. Treat the buy the car, finance, and trade as THREE SEPARATE transactions.

I hear ya OP....I'm kinda sorta checkin' out Land Rover LR3s, and I want specifically the HSE model w/ certain packages and not others. So I say that, and their like "well we have something close", and I'm like "No. If you want me to buy "something close", you better drop a hella discount on it"

Like THEY KNOW what you want, ugh...

We hit a Hummer dealership just yesterday (for fun) and I clearly stated to him this was the first time I'm looking at them and just wanted to get a feel for what they're about. Even though I didn't request a test drive, we took a good 30 minutes of his time on the lot going from the H3 to the H2 and back... even going back for a couple of keys. He had a lot of patience and was very nice to us the entire time. I asked reasonable questions which showed I was interested in what the car actually had to offer. Toward the end I said we were still going to shop around and he simply gave us his card and asked when we expected to buy (any car)... that was it. If I were in the market for real (and g'damn those H2 interiors are sweet), I'd buy from him.

No crap. I would actually spend an extra copuple of bucks on any dealer that doesn't use pressure tactics. I walk out of dealerships that use pressure tactics.
