I was checking out this 300m with 47,000 miles on it selling for just $7900 (should be at least $5-$6k mor..but it has a salvage title attached to it. Everything seems to look fine with it though. As long as I get it inspected by a mechanic, and he says it's good to go..would there be any problems with purchasing it? Because it certainly is a steal at what it's at now..and it has new rims on it as well.

We've been through this before... anyway with 10,000 dollars why don't you go to the ACauction and see what they have there...

eh?!

Exactly. Salvage title can mean a lot of things - some really bad, some that just make the car a great deal (eg theft recovery).

You may have trouble getting it insured. Check with your insurance company first.
One more thing you would be extremely lucky to find a car dealership to ever take it on on trade in the future.

We actually got our Integra about 7 years ago with a salvage title, and we've had to do nothing more than basic maintenance on it since then.

So looks like our insurer has no problems with salvage titles..

whao, good point... but I guess if you bought a Chrysler I don't think you have to worry about resale value coz its yours for life j/k, I kinda like the 300m too.

well if you have some mechanic know-how and are willing to fix the car when it breaks and it checks out ok, i'd go for it.

If you have already done this once, why are you asking the question?

If it's salvage because it was stolen or the insides were trashed - no problem. However, if it's salvage because it was in totaled, be careful. Make sure the frame is not bent.

I called up the guy and he said he had bought it salvaged when it had about 26,000 miles on it..and that owner had bought it from an auction.

Anyone know how much it costs to have a mechanic look at it?

If you're from New York, DON'T get a car with a salvaged title! I bought a kit car and it had a salvaged title, and I would have had to do tons of stuff just to get it registered. You have to have it stripped down piece by piece and the vin numbers of every piece has to match or they won't let you register the car. Trust me, it's a big hassle and can cost a lot of money... try to avoid it.

Simply because the hastle isn't worth the price savings. Unless you absolutely know why it's a salavage title you have no idea how many possible problems it could pose down the road. Leaking window/door seals. Poor alignment. Rusting out. Ect. Combine that with a kiss of death on the resale of the vehicle and it's just way too much headache for the savings.

It's just not worth it to me.

I bought a car with a salvaged title in January of 2001 with 24,700 miles on it. I havent done any work beyond the basic stuff, running fine at 92k right now. I've changed insurance around and no company has given me any problems in insuring it.

i thought most states could inspect a car with a salvage title and re-issue a regular title if everything checks out?

i mean it could have a salvage title because $10k worth of cosmetic damage was done to it and it is worth $9k...

Consumer Reports did a ...report on salvage title cars, and it's pretty messed up. Disturbing. You car could actually be 2 cars, one that got rear ended, and one that went into a barrier headfirst at 40mph. Welded together by sleazy mechanics. Some can be good, most are dicey. If I were buying salvage, I'd get it checked out by multiple mechanics first. Carfax?

If it checks out go for it. Yes it will be harder to sell but the price is right. My mustang has one and I don't give a crap. I got a good price on it and I have been all over the car and there is no frame damage. The only evidence that it was wrecked is one headlight and fender are newer and a very slight crinkle in the inner fender around the windshield washer bottle.
