IMO bikes are like furniture and cars, it is much much better to buy used. And they aren't as mechanically complicated as a car so you have much less to worry about.
For example I bought a 4 year-old bike with 300 miles on it for $500, it retailed or $1100.
But then sometimes you really want a specific model, and just have to go and get it.
They just have the allure of being Titanium and can be polished. CF can be just as strong and much lighter. Ti frames can go from $1k (motobecane) to about $4.5k (linskey helix custom geometry). CF frames range from $400 (ebay/china) to $10k (cervelo r5ca)
