buying a new car...

As you've probably deduced from my previous car threads, my family is buying a new car. We've narrowed it down to three choices, as far as I know:

Subaru Impreza 2.5TS Wagon

Subaru Outback Sport Wagon

Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Sedan

-Which car would you pick? Why?

We havent decided about leasing or buying yet, we've really been weighing the pros and cons of both. The last car we had (the dead Beetle), we bought outright. In fact, we still owe a few thousand on it, but since the tranny broke, we need a new car.

-Convince us one way or another: lease or buy outright. If we lease, it will be a 36 month lease. If we buy outright, it will be over a 60 month period (0.0% APR). Either way, there is a 1,000+ cash back bonus.

My father gets home tonight from a business trip. We will likely not go car shopping until Saturday, but it could start tomorrow. If we have configured a car exactly as we want it on the Subaru website, can we give them a print out of the options we want, and have them give us a price? How long does it usually take for an "order" like this to be ready (especially if they dont have that model in inventory)? If we "ordered" a car (not in current inventory) tomorrow, could it be ready by Monday or Tuesday?

-Can most of the upgrades, such as titanium shift knobs, premium sound system, etc., be done at the dealer to any car which we decide to buy?

If I think of more questions, I'll be sure to ask. Thanks guys!

getting rid of a car in 3 years through either leasing or buying is a waste of money. since you're not paying any interest on the loan, paying interest on a lease would be throwing away more money compared to the loan, regardless of if you keep the car 3 years or not.

You don't exactly win on insurance either.

3 years for a lease. 5 years for buying.

WRX wagon

0.0% for 60 months is better than free money. You'd be a fool not to take it.

Many options/upgrades are factory-install only (although the ones you mentioned can be dealer-installed). There is a brochure at your Scooby dealer that has a list of dealer-installed options/upgrades.

ideas on how long it would take for a car to be built to order?
My parents' Jeep Liberty took about 6 weeks from order placement to delivery. However, that was when they were in relatively high demand, so it could be sooner for your Scooby.

Also, if the interest rate is, in fact 0.0%, then BUY! There's no sense in leasing and paying interest and all those extra fees when you're basically getting a free loan from Subaru.

Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Sedan and buy it.

I don't have kids so I don't need a wagon, and if you don't own a business then buy it.

Scoobies aren't really "built-to-order." I went through a broker and specified all the exact options I wanted (including color and price ) and it took 3 days for the car to be delivered.

Chances are if you check the big dealers around you, you'll find a car similarly equipped as the one you "built" on the website. That's what I did for my WRX.

I'd take the legacy GT of the 3 there. That's a grocery getter that hauls =)

The older the car is, the cheaper the insurance. Also, if you're making payments on a car, your insurance has to be full coverage. If you are buying a car and will be selling it after a few years, you will have paid the most anyone will ever have to pay for insurance on that car. Just saying that if you pay it off quickly, you'll be able to cut your insurance costs by driving safely and dropping back to liability coverage. It makes sense for those of us who are extra careful or just that good.

If you choose to buy instead of lease, keep in mind that if they are offering 0% APR financing, you can possibly do better by asking for a reduction in the price if you don't take the 0% APR deal. For example, if you work the math you might end up ahead by financing somewhere else, because you can possibly get more of a price break on the car than you would spend on the loan interest.

Sometimes if you order a car, you won't be able to get any incentives. When I bought my Mazda 6s, if we ordered it we would've lost a few thousand in rebates...

Yeah, out of those choices, the Legacy seems to be the best, but with the new Legacy coming out, you'll end up wanting the newer and better model. So I dunno. And also, why a Subaru for a family car?

You were talking as if we kept the car for three years either way. If we buy it, we wont sell it til ATLEAST we're done paying it off.

Because they kick ass. They're awesome in the winter. And we usually only have three or four people at home at a time.
