recently moved and need to buy a new mattress that I'll probably use for the next 4 years or so. will probably move apartments 1-3 times in that time period. so, two questions: 1. need to decide between getting a queen vs full size - is a queen that much harder to transport?

2. what should I get? I'm not trying to pay too much (under $800?). I'm not picky at all, though - I've slept in like 5 different beds in the past 5 years and had no problems with any of them. I do feel like it's finally time I can kinda treat myself, though. I live in NYC. Where should I go for the best deal? Macy's? Sleepy's? IKEA? I need a place I can go to test them out and that also delivers.

thanks

edit: also, what about the actual bed? IKEA seems to have some really nice looking beds for cheap. not too worried about durability. only problem is is that the only IKEA is in Brooklyn

Mattresses are all about marketing, you should buy the cheapest one you find comfortable. All B&M stores will deliver them.

All the stores run good deals over holiday weekends, I'd keep a look out over upcoming President's Day weekend and Memorial Day if you can wait that long. I bought a King at Macy's over 4th of July a couple years ago and they gave me a year to pay it off interest-free...a lot of other stores offer similar deals. They also delivered and set up the bed for free. As for a double versus queen it's really how you feel, I don't think a queen is that much harder to transport.

Sales really mean NOTHING, there is always a sale. People buy into the whole 50% off etc crap. Just because they say a mattress is 4k but on sale for 1k doesn't mean its really a 4k mattress. He has the right idea, about going and testing one, like I said above, buy the cheapest you find comfortable. I have one I paid 1k for, its no better than the one I had before at half the price.

amongst innerspring, Simmons are the best, get a plush top but dont go for pillow top, they sag a lot. Even the cheapest ones has decent spring gauge and count

My current is a Simmons world class, I found an off brand that was the same feel and build for less money. I fell into the trap and paid more than I should have, wont happen again.

well i guess you were lucky, it is quit possible that some off brand have the gauge and sprint count but its rare, plus not all off brands will declare those specs. As far a feel is concerned, you can never be sure until you actually sleep on it for few days. Also if you are using it long term, chances are, that a low quality one will deteriorate over time. I have $300 Sealy, Simmons, Sleep number and Furniture row brand, and I tell from experience, you get what you pay for. Of course when you pay less, you feel good and your brain tricks you into thinking "this is the best"

There are many things people do not know about the mattress industry. My $500 lasted 15 years. It was a double pillow top, so I could flip it. This Simmons is a one sided, so all I can do is turn it. Leggett and Platt make most of the inner springs for the industry. We have a guy who advertises in the area who now is telling people, if your mattress is over 8, its time to replace. People are spending thousands on FOAM, gimme a break. I know I will probably hear the saying about you cant put a price on a good nights sleep, I get plenty of that with a $500 mattress and a $1000.

Yes, settle for less, you can buy a mattress using the exact same foam for less. My mom bought one from Costco.

I didn't mean less money spent, or less cost. I meant don't settle for less product. If it's the exact same thing then your mom didn't settle for less.

Any mattress that isn't a flip mattress is a joke. There is no such thing as a "no flip" mattress. It's a way for them to save money. Most inner springs are bad. Sales are jokes.

Our next one will come from Original Mattress Factory.

As far as memory foam, no thanks.

Get a latex mattress. It may be more money but it will last you FAR, FAR longer than a typical spring mattress.

If you insist on spring matressess, the W Hotel store website has great beds that you can use with a coupon you find on Google. Macys also has good sales in NYC.

Go for the larger size bed. Sex is so much better on a larger bed!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Why not? Most comfortable surface I've slept on.

Mattresses are the single easiest thing to get markdowns on when haggling. Go ask about a $2.5k mattress, offer $800, then leave your card and walk out. Do that at a few stores and you'll get a call back.

Latex is a great material, I only use Latex pillows. But for a mattress, the cheapest I found when I was shopping about 5 years ago was $1500. These were all B&M stores.
