So the wife and I are thinking about getting a new mattress. We have one of those old school coil ones right now. It's not bad. We recently stopped by a mattress store and laid on some of the Tempur Pedics. I have to say, I was quite impressed. Very soft and comfortable. Also very expensive. Obviously the salesmen justify it by saying it'll last you 20 years and you'll never need to buy another one. (But that still means I'll have to buy another one at 46!) But really... 20 years, who knows. Probably not.

We also looked at one of those Ashely Furniture brand foam mattresses and I thought it was extremely soft as well. My wife was skeptical because it was only like $1700 vs $4200 for a tempur pedic. She said it'll probably be less durable etc... which may be true. Who knows?

All I know is I like the tempur pedic, but not really the price tag. Anyone have any experience with higher end mattresses care to give their feedback/recommendations?

I have a Sealy Reflexion latex foam mattress and love it. I've not had a "memory foam" mattress before but understand they're prone to causing perspiration and getting a bit mildewy because of this.

On the price issue, $4200 sounds way high - $1700 is about what I paid and my mattress was pretty much top of the line.

DId you lay on the new spring coil ones as well? I've been sleeping on one of the foam ones from costco (~$600) for the last 4-5 years and am taking delivery of a new mattress (old spring type) this Saturday.

We made 5 different trips to different stores before we found the one we liked most. Ended up not being the "softest" on the scale, but just felt right to us. I made sure to lay on each of the contenders for at least 10 minutes at a time.

Got the "plush" version of this one from Sleep Train for 1350 I think for the mattress only.

1700 vs 4200? If they felt the same, you can buy 2 of the ashley ones and still have change. I don't have much actual knowledge about those warranties. They sound nice, but anyone have any experience with them?

Memory Foam 200%!!! Get the protective cover for it, and it will last a lifetime.

We've had ours since 2005, and it's still like brand new... Will probably last 20 years... No indents where we sleep, no sweating at night, just firm, supportive, sleepy nights

Memory foam is an overpriced gimmick IMO. There's no proof that it will give you a better night's sleep. I tried a few though when I was shopping for a new mattress last year. Ended up going for a Serta pillow top. Was far more comfortable to any of the expensive foam ones I tried.

Best bet, just take some time to go to the store and try each one they have. See which feels best.

I'm not talking about memory foam toppers, I'm talking about a 8" thick bed made of memory foam.

They're incredible.

Personally I preferred the latex foam mattresses over the memory foam - memory foam just felt too "squishy" to me. Also take it for what you will but two different salesmen at different stores said they're had multiple returns for memory foam beds being too hot. I wound up getting a Stearns & Foster Swiss Mountain Villa and it's been great so far (~6 weeks).

I tried one of those Tempur Pedics and some other foam mattress and I didn't like them at all. I found it hard as hell to turn on them and a few others I know said the same thing. I have some old coil one right now, it needs replacing but it still works good for what it's use for.

Umm, Tempur Pedic is the brand name for a memory foam mattress. The bottom line is you should buy the cheapest one that you like.

Lay in it for at least an hour before deciding if you like it. It's not for everyone. They can run hot and you melt into them. Personally I hate sleeping on one. Others love it.

Are you over or under 200 pounds?

The wife and I got a tempurpedic a few months ago and love it. We got the floor model so paid $2700 for the $4000 mattress. It's pretty fantastic.

Just bought the serta Icomfort, which is their competitor to the tempur pedic.
It has gel inserts which keep it cooler than the tempur pedic, and is about 1/2 the price.

I LOVE it...doesn't get hot, comfort is supreme, finally getting a good night's sleep after 7 years of a coil mattress (with a memory foam cover).

Me and my wife used to have one, we actually returned it for a normal coil mattress. A couple of issues with it:

Gets warm in the summer since no air is passing through it
Gets COLD and STIFF in the winter, quite actually
Expensive
Make sure to get the cloud topper as that is what makes it feel plush and comfortable

We also both bought tempurpedic cloud pillows which we still use, awesome pillows.

There was an www.ihatetempurpedic.com website floating around but I can't seem to find it now...

The warranties on mattresses sound like crap - I recently picked up a bed from Sleepy's about 2 months ago. The warranties sound great on the surface, but they said it would be void if the mattress got dirty! What a load - as if a stain on a mattress has any real impact on some manufacturing defect.

Best place to buy a mattress is costco. Why pay so much at a normal mattress retailer when you can get the same thing for a fraction of the cost?

We didn't want to risk being hot all the time, so we went with a standard independently sleeved spring mattress.
We love it. (Simmons Beauty Rest Angelique) I think it has a tiny memory foam layer on the top... probably 1/2" thick or so.

Whatever you get, make sure you get a King.

I got an independent coil bed with about a 4" memory foam top. Best of both worlds. I went to a few stores and then I found this at a local mattress company. The mattress is actually locally made in Dallas. Bought American and got a great mattress. Win win

yea, I prefer a "hard" mattress as opposed to the soft foam that flows around you.

mmntech,

The point of memory foam, etc is not necessarily the "better nights sleep" but the bed remains the way it is the day you buy it. Most inner coil beds the coils get compressed by you laying on it, and the beds end up lumpy after awhile. Which is why you need to flip them, turn them, etc. At some point the coils are so compressed that they become super uncomfortable.

I bought a new bed in August and avoided the memory foam, etc because of price, and my bed almost seems destroyed and I want to get a new one because its already very uncomfortable when it was the most comfortable one in the store when I bought it, but the coils must have been piss poor or poor quality. A $1000 bed should have lasted longer than 4 months.

Next time it's going to be the most comfortable memory foam type bed.
