Brooks Brothers make some of the best suits, short of some named designers - Easily better than anything Jos A Banks offer. Though if you want their best, you can order a "Made To Measure" suit rather than an off the rack. Those are standard patterns which they adapt to the measurements Brooks Bothers' tailor take in the store - figure a 10~15% premium over something off the rack.

A custom suit would be crafted from scratch, and would be *much* more expensive.

Good to know, I'll probably go check them out again. Looking at some of them online and they look fine. Wish I could go for the $1500 range though, I tend to like the look the best.

certainly.

Jos A Bank is going to give him a better suit than any other general mens clothing place(S&K, Mensh Warehouse, Macys ETC) but there are certainly better ones around.

Brooks Brothers casts a wide net from decent to really nice

If you aren't use to wearing a suit or this is your "first", then get a cheaper suit first. Once you buy your first one, you'll know exactly what you want/like, and what bugs the hell out of you. You can try a hundred suits on, but until you go through some of your daily routine, you can't really tell.

I went semi-out on my first one, a 3 button, ventless one. I wore it twice and don't plan on wearing it again.

there's groupons regularly for this site. Usually it's 50 off 100 or something along those lines.

I think navy or charcoal gray would be more versatile than black.

I picked a cheap suit off the rack. Tailor charged me about 60 to taper, fix the neck, hem the pants. Probably should have gotten the sleeves shortened. That would have been about another 10 or 15.

good luck - most of their suits are completely out of stock for some reason.

If you want to buy a suit online, find the Ebay seller Wizard of Aahs. Link here, if it's allowed for informational purposes:

http://stores.ebay.com/The-Wizard-of-Aahs

The guy's name is Jeff, IIRC. I've bought from him before, on the higher end of his lines (~$400) and it turned out to be a bargain. I rolled the dice because I needed a nice black suit for a wedding and I needed it fast because I was lazy. I ended up with something that almost fit off the rack, other than needing the jacket sleeves shortened, and was really well-constructed. Full floating canvas drapes nicely, pick stitching around the lapels, nice weight to the fabric, etc.

I spent about $400 for the suit and another $75 on tailoring (shortened sleeves, brought the waist in slightly, hemmed/cuffed pants). Well worth it.

looks like the same stuff being sold by Darya Trading / suits4menonline.com (site linked in above thread). not detracting from it, just seems like the same.

Also, not sure this guy is convincing me to buy a suit lol:

Avoid the Mens Warehouse, Macys, Jc Penney, Kohls, or any of the other craptastic stores where $400 suits go on sale for $250. JosA Bank is pretty craptastic unless you step up to there high end line.

Your 26 - time to buy a nice suit you cna wear for the next 5yrs. And I guarantee anyone who wears a suit or has bought a suit can tell the difference between a $1000 one and a $300 one.

If you must go cheap - head over to your Nordstroms Rack- sales people there will help you get fitted and there tailors are really good - you'll pay about $60 to have it tailored.

And when wearing a suit - get yourself a pair of lace up leather soled shoes and a matching belt. Word of advice - do not wear your pants without your jacket or you'll end up dry cleaning your pants and having mismatched separates as one will fade more than the other.

Go with 100% or 80%+ wool and avoid the polyester non-breathing suits.

Where else do you recommend, other than the Rack?

On the low end, the stuff does look very similar. I'll look at Darya and see if I can find a match on the "higher" end and order one to compare. I need another suit anyway, and I've still never gotten one that was unwearable - especially since tailoring matters more than anything, IMHO.

That guy is rockin'.

TJ Maxx also caries some higher end suits: I would recommend a Patrick James house brand suit but there are no Patrick James in Seattle, closest is Tigard.

Do you have a Dillards near you?

I got my Brooks Brothers Madison (I think) golden fleece 100% wool suit for about 450 at their semi annual sale, add another 70 to tailor and you look like a million bucks. Its also 100% made in USA from what the labels say so its even better there.

I need to take advantage of the next semi annual sale. Remember what the discount was?

They're currently doing a 25% off for Brooks card holders, but nothing is in stock.

If I could get a Golden Fleece suit for $450, I'd do it in a second. Don't the regular suits go on sale for about that, and GF is closer to 800?

Men's warehouse used to offer free alterations for the lifetime of the suit. I am not sure they offer it now. That said, the quality is not the highest. Jos A Bank is alright. It's a step above cheap.

Fly to Hong Kong. Get a bespoke suit while you tour the awesome city.

This isn't really very good advice these days - suits you'd get from HK in this price range are going to be old school - lots of padding, whereas Western style right now is very minimal and slim.

when did black suits come into style for non-funerary use?

A couple of months ago GQ warned its readers for the 181195th time that black suits are only worn during the day for funeral-goers and mobsters. I keep a dark navy blue suit that ends up being the best of both worlds.

I can't imagine ever buying clothes of any kind online. Even something that was an exact duplicate of what I've purchased in the past, I still want to look it over before forking over money for it. Inspect for any kind of bad stitching, misalignment, etc. Shipping it back and forth to get a good one is not my idea of fun.

Just a suggestion - if you live in upscale suburbia you probably have a second-hand shop (perhaps with a fancier name) and you can get some awesome stuff there. Our local place http://www.gentlemensagreement.net/

It if doesn't fit, nothing else matters.

went to kohl's and picked up 2 pairs of pants for a hundred bucks.

get $20 shirts from kohl's/JCPen/TJMax and cheap $20 ties.

for the coat, find an outlet factory, one hundred bucks easily for a quality one you can touch and feel for yourself; new.

the way I see it...

who's going to replace it when it gets ripped and torn?
no one.

as long as you have good hygeine and present yourself professionally, a clean shirt and tie is all you really need these days in our fast and wreckless formal-world.

p.s. wear black socks and shined shoes. and smile, not to mention.
