A box cutter would work better.

QFT..I hate buying something only to find out someone used too big a cutter to cut open the case and now my item has a slice into it.

The worst was a laundry detergent bottle. Was fine in the store, when I got home the cut opened up and it made a mess of the rest of my groceries. It was about 1" above the bottom of the container.

If I didn't have it in a container in my trunk my trunk upholstery and underlayment would have needed to be replaced.

They gave me a refund and when I went back to the aisle there were others seeping. Sad part was they gave proper box cutters to their employees, yet some like their Crocodille Dundee blades

The manager said the stocker would not be fired fortunately, he was new. I brought it up because I had made the mistake cutting open boxes with too long a knife and once you learn not to do it again, it's a non-event.

UPDATE 7/16/2012: Finally got one and went with the Kimura IV since I like its blade style the best.

http://www.bladehq.com/item--Bradley-Kimura-IV--5563

I actually like it although I managed to cut myself once about a week after receiving it. That was my own fault since I was showing off for someone and momentarily lost focus on which way the blade was facing. Luckily the blade is sharp and the cut healed very quickly. I'll have to be careful where I carry it since it's illegal in places like NYC and Canada.

It seems to be well-built with a nice, sturdy feel and heft to it. The blade is very sharp and there's not much play in the handles. I ended up getting it from knifecountryusa.com. It was cheaper on bladehq but, they wanted me to attest that I was an authorized procurer for the police or military and I didn't want to commit fraud to obtain it. At knifecountryusa it was "no questions asked."

Thanks for your coments.

It's actually nice. The skeletal frame with all of the holes through it provide seem to provide plenty of grip. I haven't felt it slipping nor have I dropped it yet.

You sir are not only an idiot, you're a monumental idiot and you'd likely shit your pants if you even saw somebody holding a knife. A knife is NOT a defense weapon. It loses to a gun, a baseball bat, a stun gun, a can of mace and a guy throwing rocks. And it's not even a proper defense against another person with a knife. A "pro" would drop his own knife and go empty hand against an attacker with a knife because that's the easiest way to disarm somebody with a knife. Knife fights are for movies.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but you don't know what you are talking about. You don't know the person you are responding to, nor do you seem to have the slightest idea what a "pro" would do, just stop.

You can say the average Joe Sixpack does not have the intestinal fortitude to take an edged weapon to someone (justified or not) and you'd be right. But your little run down on their effectiveness couldn't be more wrong, sorry.
I get the impression you have not traveled much, nor have you had to deal with much violence (that's a good thing!).

Do you not know many cops? Bouncers? Ever traveled to South America? Philippines?

Now I can't speak for all of them, but going on my experiences and study a "pro", when faced with a determined and imminent edge weapon threat, will turn tail and beat feet if possible. A tactic that everyone should adopt. If not possible, the blade he carries is not for show, and will be obscured until a fight-ending cut can be delivered.
Show me a guy who delights in menacing people with a blade and I'll show you an idiot destined for the hospital, or morgue. You don't advertise what the opposition can use against you: the reach of your weapon, whether or not it's sharpened on both sides, if there is a pommel to worry about, etc. You certainly don't drop your weapon and embolden the aggressor into thinking he's got the upper hand, sounds like you're the one hitting the movies too hard.

I don't understand the appeal of balisongs, never have. Showing off manual dexterity may be what someone is going for, but I'd rather have a piece that was safer to use, sturdier, and a lot quieter and less flashy to operate. If OP is happy with it more power to him tho...

Yeah. I'm not very good with knives so I need a big one to accomplish the simplest of tasks.

Is that HK sporting an AXIS lock? Looks very similar to one of my Benchmades.

I'm curious, what steel is the blade?

I lost that one in the gym. Switching off between an H&K Tumult and a Benchmade Infidel now.

Pretty much this. Just flipping it for a hobby and for a conversation piece in bars. I've got a nice sized swiss army knife to use as an EDC.

i've messed up the blades on knives cutting through packing tape before. better off getting a utility knife, you can just toss the blade when it gets mucked up. or make sure you clean it and get it sharpened a lot.

i also have a butterfly knife (it's too crappy to call a balisong). it's fun to flip around, as long as the blade is facing the right way.
