Buying Gifts For Adults Sucks....

It really does.

We have this standard tradition of getting everyone in the family a gift. So we give my 2 brother-in-laws a gift (along with their wives), plus my mom+dad, plus wife's mom+dad. This year we at least decided - instead of everyone getting eachother a present, we will just do 1-secret santa where each person just gets 1 person a gift.

Nieces and Nephews are usually fine, there is always something for kids - especially when they have something like a game console you can just keep getting them a new game or something.

But buying gifts for grown adults just sucks. Mostly because, if there was something I REALLY wanted, I would have already bought it. I want a new desk-chair, but for the life of me - I can't find a nice-ass genuine leather one that I don't fear will fall apart. I want a new router with better range, but WiFi 6 overall sucks and not worth the upgrade until WiFi 7 is out.

At the end of the day, I try to be as nice as possible, because I don't want people stressing over what gift to give me - because I hate it too. So I always tell folks no matter what - Beer is always a safe bet. Stouts, porters, barleywine, old ale, belgian brews, etc... Go to your biggest liquor store - look for a section of beer bottles that are as big as wine bottles, and just pick any. It's hard to screw up.

Then stop it. We did several years ago. Bro is a plumber and has really nice toys. No way I can get him something he hasn't already bought.

Until the rona, dinner and hang out.

We switch over to a Secret Santa for the Adults.
We use the Elfster app
You can enter a wish list
It is so much better, easier, and cost effective.

We just decided not to get the adults anything and just get the kids gifts. The kids all did a secret Santa between themselves as well to make things a little more fun. We will however get something for my parents. They moved into a new house a few months ago so we’ll probably get them a family portrait printed on canvas or something to hang up.

Thats exactly what we just did this year. Normally we see each other for the holidays - but from COVID none of us are going to fly out this year.

Even still - my point is that majority of adults have a hard time even coming up with a wishlist - or at least - one that falls within a reasonable gift price.

Thats exactly why I just put beer on the list. No matter what I won't be disappointed - and no matter what, no one should have a hard time finding it.

We did rotating random gifts for the adults a few years--1 person gets one other person a gift, all kids get gifts from all adults.

Now, we just said eff it and only get gifts for kids.

kids are what the holiday is about.

Some years my wife and I exchange gifts...but for the most part, we just buy what we want during the year and don't bother with Christmas/birthday gifts.

kids always need socks...

Birthdays are the worst - they never stop, it's _always_ somebody-or-other's birthday. It's the stress of thinking of something 'non-generic' and 'appropriate' to get that is the problem, rather than the expense or effort of actually getting that thing. I need a PA who can handle that stuff for me, the way rich business-types do.

Just give everyone gift cards.

As long as its a generic gift card. Amazon I can just straight load it into my account and it automatically will be utilized. Same goes with Target.

But what I hate are just bringing random ass restaurant ones - where I'm like "Oh god, I have this PF Changs gift card... I guess we can drive 25 minutes there tonight".

And other ones where you're just like "Shit, did you bring the gift card? I've been meaning to get rid of that".

Maybe that's why people have kids - because they are so much easier to find presents for, than adults are?

I've learned with my dad the older they get the more appropriate clothing is...

Get them an oversized T-shirts and/or sweater or 2 of their favorite team.

The point? When you're old they aren't exactly going to the mall every month....

For the siblings in both my family and my inlaws, like 10 years ago we switched over to secret santa with a $50 limit.

But after like 2 years of everyoen buying eachother $50 gift cards we decided to just scrap it completely and now we just buy gifts for the kids.

The only adults we buy gifts for are our parents. That's it.

My wife and I don't even really exchange gifts.

And it's fantastic.

Although now that our son is old enough to enjoy xmas we're going to start getting each other little stuff for his sake, so he can see us exchanging gifts.

Adults can buy their own fucking socks.
right after college i gave myself socks. snuck them under the tree with the presents from mom and dad and grandma, etc. opened them up, marvelled at my socks, said, "thanks santa," and my mom spent the whole of christmas morning calling everybody up trying to find out who'd bought me socks
