1) HOW do the following compare? They're all 4-port switch/firewall/routers:
NR041 - $49.99
Great router, does NATing but not a real Firewall. I have one I use all the time. (Got it for free ... if I had to buy one I'd get the SX41)BEFSR41 - $59.99 - $10 rebate
This model is basically a revision of the SR41 with all the SRs great features plus an actual HW FW allowing SPI, some DoS protection, VPN, etc....BEFSX41 - $79.99
If you're using the SX then no you don't need a SW FW. If you're using on of the others then perhaps but for home use it really probably doesn't matter.2) Also, even those these have built-in firewalls, do I have to use a software firewall?
Because no one trusts MS.3) If so, why does everyone recommend NOT using WinXP's builtin firewall? Why do I have to use a third party one?
Care to elaborate on "fried".Originally posted by: Schadenfroh
we use all SMC at my house, never had any trouble with the router but the SMC switches get fried very easily.

Well, there's that. Plus, a software firewall takes up system resources. The fewer programs I have running in the background while I'm pwning at CS, the better
