Buying New Hard Drive (suggestions please)

I currently have a WD 40GIG 5400RPM Hard Drive, My windows XP System runs extremely slow.....

I want to upgrade to a Faster HD ....

Does anyone know any good deals out there? I want the best Hard Drive I can get, but at the cheapest possible price.

I have found at Dell i can get the 80GB Western Digital 7200RPM w/8mb buffer for $135

Western Digital drives have been very reliable for me (knock on wood). However, I'm also pleased with my new 40GB Maxtor (haven't had it for long though).

TechyShAgGz, you can pick up a Seagate 40GB Barracuda IV at Newegg.com for $74. The 60GB is $93, while the 80GB is $111. The Barracuda IV is w/o a doubt the quietest 7200RPM drive on the market right now. I've installed five of the 40GB'ers recently and you literally cannot hear them. I put one in a box I recently built for myself, w/ an EPoX 4SDA+ board w/ the HighPoint 372, and it's the fastest drive/controller combo I've yet used.

EDIT: It appears Newegg has free FedExSaver shipping on Seagate's right now too.

Another nod for the Seagates, I have installed at least 100 of them in 20 and 40 gig sizes. They are the quietest drives I have ever seen and run quite well to boot. we haven;t had an issues with reliability either. I run 2 of them in my personal machine and love em'.

THat 8MB 80GB Cache drive is $125 with free shipping at Newegg last I looked. For that price on Dell's site, I would make sure you are getting a retail one or one not Dell branded (Has Dells name instead of WD's)... that way you are sure to get the WD 3 year warrentee.

The 80GB WD 800JB (8 MB cache) HD will be faster than the 40GB Barracude IV HD.

definately faster, I can't vouch for sound but all modern ide drives are pretty quiet.

you said you want the best hard drive, unless you want SCSI get the western digital with the 8mb cache

well, this won't be faster than the WD drive, but you mentioned you were also looking for good deals, so here ya go: Right now (just started today, Sunday, 6/2), Staples has a Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM drive on sale (supposedly the drive is part of the Diamondmax D740X line, and is supposedly ATA133). For details on the deal, check out this thread over in the AT Hot Deals forum (final price for the drive after rebates & coupons works out to around $80)

Well i havn't actually steered away from SCSI .... if i were to get a SCSI Drive ... which would be best (at the cheapest price) ??? I'm very open to suggestions ... I've never used anything but IDE .... so I don't even have a SCSI card (so i would need to know which one to get, and how much those run also) ....
