I always give the same advice:
-Don't buy pillowtops, they are an "at the store" sell which, generally, are a cheap way to make it very plush with minimal additions to their cost, but use a low density, cheap foam that will break down and "slide." They can be done right, but usually they are not.
-Don't buy tempurpedic, there is nothing proprietary about them, they make YOU pay for their advertising
You may find different types of memory foam, my father's company offers combinations of foam that may create a custom firmness, and could even half different combinations on separate halves of the mattress.
Latex is also a great mattress that still has a "spring" to it, I've slept on both for years and love each type in their own ways. I plan to make a hybrid between them that I hope will be the "perfect" mattress for me.
Good luck!
I really need to get a new mattress as well - waking up every morning with aches and pains. Seems like the W Hotel Bed gets great reviews. Anyone have experience with them? I'm a big guy with a wife and a king size bed.
Most are the same with just differant covers.
Buy the cheapest one that has the cover/fill/foam you want.
I got my foam bed from costco. Its a softer version so you would want to look for the higher rated one.
But go to not only costco store but their website. Most have free shipping.
i got one in like july, kingsize one. i'm pretty big myself, 5'11 220lbs.
first night i slept on it was the first night i woke up without back pains in years (i have a bad back as is).
i got the plush top since i heard the pillowtop was too soft. i actually went and tried it out at sleepys before i bought it from the w hotel store online w/a coupon code. it is not a reall yfirm bed at all, but man it is so comfortable. i still have trouble getting up in the morning.
the duvet i got from there is also REALLY comfortable too, however, after a few weeks after dry cleaning it, i tend to see a lot more pieces of down start to fly around my room when i'm ruffling the comforter.
the only thing i'm not 100% on are the pillows. i got 4 king size cloud pillows, and my wife loves em. sometimes they are a tad too soft for me, and they tend to get kind of hot too if they 'wrap' around your head. i was debating the ultra cloud pillows but i'm really glad i didn't get those because they would probably be way too soft.
Go to a Jc Penny and try a Latex pillow. You can usually get them on sale in the $30 range, they are amazing. I told a friend about them and he bought 2. Only pillow I will ever use, they last like 15 years.
when i went to visit my friend in san diego, i was using a 'different' type of pillow that was foamy. is that what latex pillows are? it kind of seems like it from the quick google search, however his wasn't quite 'flat' all around, it kind of had a little bit of a 'texture' to the actual pillow (if that makes any sense).
and i will say i did like it a lot, the firmness on it was perfect and it didn't really get too hot.
I got a nice Sealy foam, extra firm. Just bounce around the mattress stores for a while and you can find anything you want dirt cheap. There are always sales. And most suburban neighborhoods have ASSLOADS of fucking mattress stores. What is it with those assholes? Do they honestly think we need a new mattress every month?
Here is a Latex pillow from Jc Penny.

How are these for side/stomach sleepers?

Think I'll go to my local Sleepy's tonight. Is this the duvet? http://www.whotelsthestore.com/item.asp?curr_item_id=34&cat_subcat_id=10
Or just the (cheaper) featherbed? http://www.whotelsthestore.com/item.asp?curr_item_id=26&cat_subcat_id=10
I still think tempur feels the best by far, but I don't have enough trouble sleeping to justify that cost.

I think theirs feels better than others, yes. But no, I haven't and won't spend money on it.You mean memory foam, Tempurpedic is just the brand name. :sneaky:
