The drive should have a connector for power connector from the power supply. Should have a 4 pin "molex" connector, though I've never installed a serial ata hard drive, every other one has them.

All you need are SATA data cables (the little skinny ones) and either plain ol' Molex power cables (the same ones used for IDE drives) or the specialized SATA power cables. DO NOT use both power cables at once, you WILL fry your drive(s).

the drive only needs to connect to your mobo not psu right?

it just gets the power from the mobo which is connected to the psu?? is this true for all drives hdds and disk drives alike?

It is connected to the motherboard and power supply via the molex connector.

Alb, it goes like this...

Motherboard SATA connector>SATA cord>HDD

Power supply>4pin molex or specialized SATA power cord>HDD

So, you will have 2 cords connecting to your HDD. One from the motherboard (Which is to transfer data, not power it). The second is from your PSU, which will either be a 4pin molex or a SATA power cord. That will power the drive.

he thinks the SATA drive is powered by the motherboard (no external power source) but from what I understand, there is the option to use MOLEX or the SATA power cables, and that the drive does not draw it's power from the SATA connecter on the MB.

A regular 4-pin power connector like the ones on CD drives or IDE hard drives.

You just need 2 4 pin power connectors like the ones going to your current harddrive/optical drives.

They made the ground contacts longer so you can hot-swap drives safely.
