Trying to decide on a great P4 Air cooled HSF combo. I?m definitely not into any type of water cooled stuff. I'm buying tomorrow morning, so any suggestions or comments would be helpful.

I will be putting this on a ABIT IC7 & Kingston HyperX PC3500 512 X2 & P4c 2.4c to O?C to about 3.2+. I?d like to get a great HSF combo that will get me to at least 3.2Ghz with stability, anything beyond this is nice but not ?required.?

So far I?ve decided on the Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu for $35 @ NewEgg. I?m not really interested in the ALL CU version as its way too heavy and I?m too worried about damaging my MB while moving my case, and from what I read it only cools better by about 2-4 degrees C. Not really worth it.

These are the other alternatives I?m looking at:

1. Swiftech MCX4000-B

2. Thermalright SLK-800-U

3. Thermalright SLK-900-U

Could anyone out there please give me your opinions? Of course if you already have one of the above, I?m sure you?ll recommend it. But would anyone know of a comparison of the above 4 head to head?

The last thing, I?m wondering is if this is just getting out of hand with the $$ I?m spending. I mean is $35 good enough to O?C to 3.2 with my CPU? Do I really need to spend around $50-60 for one of the above Heatsink, and then a FAN and Fan controller? I just think anything over $45-50 for a HSF combo is a bit excessive.

Does anyone think that I have a good chance of getting to 3.2Ghz with the Zalman, or would I need something beefier above?

Thanks

Can anyone Help here?? I'll be ordering in about 2 or 3 hours. Or should I just stick with the HSF I already picked out. Thanks

Well, since you don't seem to care about 4 degrees C, you would probably be happy with whichever one is the cheapest. I think the Zalman would have the best performance/noise ratio, but with the right fan, you could get one of the others to cool better.

KETCHUP: Well I do care about 4 Deg C, but I'm not too sure its worth the extra risks that would come with the 7000 Cu

And the 7000AlCu comes with a 92MM Zalman fan that I hear is super quite and has a max RPM of 2400 & 25db. Would anyone say to get higher RPM 92mm Fan, BUT NOT TOO LOUD; like maybe up to 35db or something. BUT I think that the Zalman 7000AlCu Cooler is shaped in such a way that it would be difficult to put a 'nomal/regular' 92mm fan on top if I were to replace the fan that comes with the unit?

Thoughts anyone??

Go with the 7000 AlCu, I have not problems with mine right now. Running 39C/52C (idle/loaded) on a P4C 3.0 GHz right now. And those temps are not very relyable (as in higher then they should be) because its on an Abit IC7-G, and all Abit's boards tend to report temps about 5 degree's higher then actual for some reason.

As for replacing the fan. It is not recommended. You would have to take apart another 92mm fan and then fit it to the Zalman. The fan in the Zalman is shaped specifically for the Zalman (i.e. the way the fins are curved to give the maximum push through the heatsink fins).

If you think spending 45-60 for HSF combo is excessive, you shouldn't be overclocking!

I'd go with the Thermalright SLK with a nice Panaflo 92mm H1A. Awesome combo for P4s, and this heatwink will work with some AMD motherboards.

I also have an Swiftech MCX4000 with TMD fan for sale here if you are interested. Very nice setup as well.

I would strongly suggest against the slk800, as the base does not completely cover the cpu... I switched to a mcx4000b and love it... if you go with an slk, I would suggest a high cfm fan... so that you can truly benefit from the design... I don't think that an increase in cfm would cool much more on the swiftech...(certainly not as much % wise as the slk). The zalman seems to be a good bet also... I would say swiftech or zalman for quiet/great cooling and the slk for loud/incredible cooling.
