" PLEASE when POST threads asking for input on system builds tell us...

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc, etc, etc, you get the picture.

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

The above information IS NEEDED, in order that WE can help YOU make wise judgments on YOUR purchases
"

1) video editing/gaming

2) 1,000 - 1,200

3) Canada

5) just a burner and some additional hard drives

6) yes

7) yes overclocking

One of the issues with the lower-priced Yorkfields (at least for overclockers) is the lower multiplier. At 400 MHz FSB, you'll be getting only 3.2 GHz on the Q9450. On the other hand, the 45nm chips should run more efficiently so 3.2+ might be more feasible with air cooling on the Q9450 than on, say, the Q6600. I strongly advise you to peruse the threads that report quadcore overclocking results. Don't get me wrong: the Q9450 will be a fantastic cpu, but you need to be mindful of possible overclocking limitations with the Yorkfields. You'll have to increase the FSB quite a bit more owing to the lower multiplier.

Never used Ballistix myself, but there have been a lot of complaints regarding recent kits. I might buy Corsair et al instead (there are a bunch of Corsair rebates expiring today).

Few people seem to have Q9450s at this point, so the situation isn't as clear regarding motherboard support as, say, the E8400s. I wouldn't bet on your board coming with a BIOS that fully supports the Yorkfields... You might want to have another LGA775 chip handy.

thanks for the reply.

i'm a big fan of corsair so i'll definitly consider it.

wouldn't the 12meg cache help with encoding and games vs the 6meg cache available on the older quad cores?

still looking for a motherboard suggestion if anyone else one or ideas on other parts.

Crucial are pretty reliable and have great customer service but are often a little overpriced. I've had good experiences with Corsair, too.

Cache size will make much less difference than clock speed.

Gigabyte P35-DS3L or Abit IP35-E for a low end motherboard, suits all the basic needs.

Also, opt for 4GB of memory.
