Hi,

I'm resurrecting some semi-old servers at work and one thing they lack is HD space. I have permission to spend some money on buying new HDs but I wanted to make sure I get ones that are compatible and the best deal I can get.

The current HDs are HP labeled 36.4gb Model MAU3036NC drives. It looks like they are Ultra320 SCSI 80-pin drives.

I'd like to get drives that are at least 100gb. Would any Ultra320 80-pin drive work? The cheapest ones > 100gb I can see on newegg are these open box Seagate Cheetahs:

Any thoughts?

Thanks

You can try buying them used on ebay. There is a demand for them with the people that hold on to old hardware but businesses that cycle out hardware are getting rid of them for SAS servers / SANs. I think Ultra320 drive production has ceased.

What you are looking for is "SCA" connector drives.

Those drives you linked too will work fine. As the controller will handle your 36 gig Fujitsu's it should handle any U320 80 pin drives.
You may want to check around the for sale forums, etc as probably like myself, quite a few folks have drives laying around that would be cheaper than the one linked too.

You're very likely going to have to contact some business to business reseller specializing in storage solutions.

A quick google search for "SCA hard drive" landed me here:
http://discountechnology.com/Products/146GB-147GB-80-pin-SCA-2-SCSI-Hard-Drives

There are probably other places like that, but you're not going to find what you're looking for at consumer type sources. It was hard enough to find SCA / 80-pin SCSI drives in consumer type outlets when they were modern technology. Now that Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) has pretty firmly replaced SCA at this point, you're just not going to find them anywhere but a "specialty store".

probably easier to find 72gb drives - but hp controllers like hp firmware drives for stability. they did last a while huh?

Im a SCSI/SAS fan so dont get me wrong on this but if there is room for a SATA controller in the case then Buy one cheap and pick up a few SATA drives.
You will save so much more money, A larger increase in speed and capacity.

I just went through A box of 10k/15k Ultraxxx drives of various sizes, The fluidness is there but still not even a match for speed against todays green SATA drives.
Now I have a smaller box of magnets after tearing them all down.

yeah but drives that keep on rocking for 10 years - not modern green sata drives lol.

crusty dirty scsi drives 10 years EASY with 24x7x365 load (100% duty cycle).

I agree with Emulex... I have a stack of 149gig 10k / 73gig 15k that are out of service purely because the servers they were in were retired out. Drives ran fine for 8 years plus. I keep them for random test environment stuff.

What are you going to use the servers for?

Personally, I'd probably hit up ebay or an online reseller.

hp drives tend to be a little more expensives than other drives. You should be able to get 146gb 10k drives for $50-80 or 15ks ~$100 each. 73gb drives seem to be alot more abundant and cheap. 300gb drives, you'd be looking at ~$200/ea

146gb 10k Listed as ' NEW BULK' $70 each w\ more than 10 available.

I used allhdd.com They had the best prices, even compared to ebay, for my HP DL380's and my IBM x336's. I got 73 and 146GB 15kRPM models for them. They have models with and without the authentic drive sleds.
