My dad want's a machine to do high-res photo storing, editing, and websurfing, so I'm going to get him one for christmas. He has a comp for work, but the company has lock-outs that won't let him install anything, or surf the web. (I could bypass them easily, but if the company found out he might be fired). He has a Nikon D100, and this Nikon thing that scans negatives. He wants to convert his old negatives into digital photos mainly.

Motherboard: Biostar GeForce 6100-m7 $64.00
CPU: AMD Sempron 2600+ $64.00 (strong enough?)
RAM: Corsair Value Select 1GB $74.89 (It says CAS 2.5. I thought it was supposed to be 3 (I have that ram). Did they lower the latency or something?)
Hard Drive: Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 $108.00
DVD Burner: BenQ DQ60 Black $45.00
Case + PSU: Antec Solution Series SLK3800B $89.99 (I think this should be enough power...)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition $89.99

Total: 537.86

What do you think? It should stay around $500.

EDIT: BTW I'm buying today so I can have it ready by Christmas.

Why not just order a dell basic pc from dell.com? You'll get a better setup and it'll cost less.

Edit:
NVM, just seen the sentence against dell/intel, why do you not want that? I don't know, the Sempron...I don't think that is your best bet if you're going to be doing photo editting and everything else all at once.

Better setup? Would a Celery really be better?

EDIT: I don't think the 256MB of ram in the Dell would be enough to handle huge high res photos.

Celeron? No...I got a Pentium 4 - 2.8 ghz 800 FSB for less than that with a DVD-R/RW drive, etc. The worst parts are the RAM, it came with 512 RAM with a 3.0 CAS, but depends how many applications you have open, it should be good enough. I got mine with a 17 " LCD flat panel for $700 total. There was a sale that day, but without the LCD you'll come close to $500.

Edit:
Don't get a Celeron, hold on I'll show you a good customized package.

This program that he uses is a ram hog. A PC that he tried it on before had 512MB and it was just sooooo slow.

Oh well, I guess your setup is good, I'm just trying to show you some other setups around there. He might have had a very bad RAM, this is pc2-3200 ram @ 400 mhz.

It was PC-3200 in dual channel. DDR1, 2.5CAS.

Might want to look at different hard drive options, you can find some SATA 250gb for around 80-90 bucks after rebate in stores like BB, CC and CompUsa. Looks good though.

Everything you have looks good. It's hard to do better for around 500. This also leaves a moderate upgrade path, you won't get that with a low-end Dell junker.

I'm actually considering switching from the 754 to the 939 biostar board, and getting a 3000+ Venice. It might be worth the extra money...

How is my dell system a low-end junker? Come on, that is just bias hate. Yes, some of those basic Celeron pcs are the worst, but then again they cost $200. I can't complain about my dell, it does have decent specs and works like a charm.

If you're switching motherboards, get a standard ATX board. Your case isn't mATX by any means, it'll be easier to work with, and he has more upgrade possibilities with the extra PCI slots.

The Biostar GeForce 6100-M9 is only a few dollars more and supports X2's. The 3000+ venice seems to be out of stock at alot of places (It's been axed by AMD) but I'm sure you can find one. If you can only find them marked up at around 3200+ prices just get a 3200+ instead. But this is all around 110 more than you set out to spend. It's worth it just for X2 compatibility and more memory upgrades.
