Buying windows 7 upgrade with out ownig XP

So I can purchase a college windows 7 upgrade but I currently don't own a copy of windows xp. Is it possible to download a trial version of Xp and then purchase the upgrade so I have a fully licensed version of 7 on my computer? Unless someone has a better idea or something more inexpensive. Thanks!

there is no trial of xp, you have to do the w7 upgrade install over itself, google fu for the instructions on it.

Do the double install trick. First, install it to your bare hard drive. When it asks, just leave the CD key blank. After it is installed and fully updates (not activates) over the internet, this will take maybe more than one reboot, reinsert your Windows 7 disk and "upgrade" the install you just performed, this time inserting your CD key when asked.

Without a legally owned previous version of Windows you'll never have a legally licensed version of Windows with just the upgrade. Even with using the double-install trick, you'll still be in violation of the license so will technically be using a pirated installation. But that's a moral question you have to answer yourself.
