Buying Windows XP

So, I'm building a computer and I've decided that I want to go with XP instead of Vista. I'm just not really ready to learn a new OS, especially one that is such a resource hog, etc. I just don't need it. So, I want to get XP Professional w/ SP2b. What I'm wondering is if it's possible to get an educational discount for something like this. I don't think that possible for the hardware (too bad), but I know academic prices are sometimes available for OS's and software in general. Oh, and I'm a college student. So I've got an ID and all that good stuff...

Even though you want XP, make sure you go ahead and take advantage of the free upgrade coupon. You don't have to install vista right away, but you might as well get the DVD while they are offering it. that will save you $70-$100+ when you do decide to upgrade. The upgrade coupon expires in May I think.

OK, thanks for the advice. Do you know if there are academic licenses available for XP? I know for a lot of software you can get pretty large "academic" discounts... For example, here (http://www.directron.com/xpproacademic.html) there is an academic version, but I'm not sure whether or not it's just an upgrade from an earlier OS....

The upgrade coupon expires Feb 28th and the submitted papers need to be postmarked march 15th or before in order to be eligible for the upgrade.

That's an upgrade version. XP Pro OEM with a Vista upgrade coupon sounds like a good bet, though. If I can offer some tangential advice, consider using a Limited account and having a separate one dedicated to visitors, so roommates/visitors can't seriously mess up your computer when you're not around, or get into your stuff.

When you say that the upgrade coupon expires Feb 28th, does that mean this month or next year? Thanks...

I'm pretty sure it's this month.
