Got my Linksys happily doing DHCP chores in the new place now. Cable modem instead of DSL - but... it rocks!

One of my new Durons showed up today, so the crack rack expands...
just thought I'd share that with you...

Cable modems will be coming to my area in another month through @home. I currently have DSL 768/128. Could you compare and contrast your experience with both? Cable will be about $15 cheaper a month for me but I dont want to switch if it isnt better.

TIA

I had literally one of the first 10 DSL lines in the area. It was pretty good, or so I thought until I tried cable. This is 'smokin'... but - I understand upload is throttled at 128 Kbps - so that *could* be an issue - but has yet to manifest itself.

Just to test things out, I put up a UT server and went to the other house to try it. Worked great. I found the ATT people to be alot more on the ball than USWorst. Overall, so far - a very pleasant experience.

buahahhhahah!

cable is sooo much better than dsl... some friends' CLEC went out of business, and between when they originally had dsl and now they changed the distance from 17000 feet to 13000 feet so now southwestern bell won't even let them have dsl. they say "ping times are better on dsl blah blah" i don't buy it my cable times were tiny. but now i don't have cable because this apartment complex isn't wired for it (we use satellites). have this weird ethernet over copper stuff that does 1 Mbps or sometimes better, and i tell my roommate its slow (80KBps vs 300+ KBps with cable)

WTG DanC! I recently installed a Linksys router/4-port switch where I prevously had dual NICs in main machine to provide multiple systems with access to cable. Linksys has a great product, gotta love it! After I tweaked my system based on info from DSLReports, it screams. I d/l'ed a 48MB game demo in just under 5 mins.

At my Corp. Apt. I am like ElFenix and only have Sat. TV available. So, I suffer through 56k dialup.

I have @Home cable internet service where I live (just outside of Baltimore) and it's decent. I've occasionally had outages, but no more than once every other month or so. Speeds aren't spectacular like some people get, but I generally can download at 100K-200K per second depending on the server I'm downloading from. They've recently forced everyone to switch from static IPs to DHCP, but they don't rotate the addresses very often so I can still connect to my home box from work when I need to. Overall it's pretty good, minus the occasional outages.

I have @Home cable service too, and my own experience has been that the Cable offers more bandwidth than DSL, but it does bog down as more people get the @Home service too(the nature of Cable).

I've also noticed that many DSL users seem to get much better ping times on the UT and CS servers on the Net; granted, their overall bandwidth might not be as great, but I'll take a faster ping over greater capacity[when playing a game head to head on the Internet] anytime!

Unfortunately, DSL isn't being offered in the Grand Rapids area. It is available in Lansing and Muskegon(MI) though.. go figure..

I tell everyone around my area to go with DSL. I have cable and don't want to share.

I love my cable modem.

LOL!

I'll have to remember that!

I too have a Linksys broadband router/4-port switch connected to Road Runner at home and love it.
